There’s more awareness than ever about the problems associated with industrial meat production, from its contribution to climate change and pollution to the abysmal treatment of animals and workers in meatpacking plants.

Yet many people find the idea of going vegetarian or full-on vegan to be difficult, even unimaginable. Only 5 percent of US adults are vegetarian or vegan, and most don’t stick with it — one study found 84 percent of vegetarians or vegans abandon their diet at some point.

At the same time, nearly a quarter of Americans say they are trying to cut back on meat.

We’re here to help.

Two years ago, Vox launched Meat/Less, a newsletter course to help our readers set achievable goals to reduce meat consumption and have an impact on climate change and animal welfare (and eat healthier, to boot). We got a ton of positive reader feedback, as well as suggestions on how we could improve, so we recently gave it a refresh with more recipes, cooking tips, and stories on how what we eat shapes the world.

Sign up and we’ll send you five newsletter emails — one per week — that’ll teach you how to easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet, give you evidence-based behavior strategies to make it last, and serve up plenty of food for thought on how our choices impact animals, our health, and the planet.

Want to get started? Sign up for Vox’s free Meat/Less newsletter course now.

The guide is written to help anyone on the less-meat spectrum, from aspiring flexitarians to full-on vegans. We’ll answer some of the most common questions about eating less meat:

What impact can one person really make?

If I am going to give up one type of meat, should I cut back on chicken or steak?

Where do vegetarians get their protein?

I’m terrible at making new habits stick … please help?

The newsletter, by Vox Future Perfect staff writer Kenny Torrella, gives readers the practical tools to eat less meat and more plant-based foods, like tips on what to cook, where to shop and eat, and how to be healthy on a plant-based diet. Kenny also answers big questions around the impact of eating less meat, like which types of meat have the biggest impacts on animals and the planet, and whether our individual food choices actually make a difference.

Since 2020, Vox has significantly increased our coverage of industrialized animal farming and its effects on animal welfare, public health, and the environment thanks to generous funders and readers, work that has ranged from a podcast miniseries to a video series to stories on Future Perfect.

We know our audience is looking for practical advice on how to live a better life in accordance with their values. We’re excited to be relaunching Meat/Less and look forward to hearing from readers about this course and what future ones we should offer.

On January 6, Vox’s senior health correspondent, Julia Belluz, published an article about a mysterious respiratory illness baffling doctors in China. Since that first piece in January, Vox has been covering this topic extensively, tirelessly, and with our accessible style of explanatory journalism that is particularly important when the stakes are as high as they are now and when a story has as many twists and turns as the coronavirus pandemic does.

Our mission has always been to empower audiences through understanding. During this global health and economic crisis, this essential work is finding an enormous audience around the world.

Our article on “flattening the curve,” one of the first of its kind, has been viewed more than 9.4 million times and was shared on Twitter and Facebook by former President Barack Obama. We produced a video inspired by that viral article that now has more than 6 million views on YouTube and has been translated into more than 75 different languages, helping to spread this crucial message across the globe.

Italy’s state police and the Philippine Health Department have adapted the video for their own citizens; the latter country’s version has reached at least 2 million views. As a whole, our Covid-19 coverage has garnered more than 95 million pageviews on Vox’s site alone, and more than 44 million YouTube views. Our commitment to reporting on this crisis with clarity, care, and context is helping people across the globe stay safe and informed.

And we’re just getting started.

Our dedicated team of journalists has boundless ambitions — and feels a great sense of responsibility — to bring you more of our distinctive coverage, in new and different ways, and to continue doing so for free. But even with record audience growth, the media business is not immune to the effects of economic downturns. In fact, right now, when audiences need quality, accessible journalism the most, ad revenue is on the decline as companies move to save money and shrink their marketing budgets.

This is why we’re asking those of you who enjoy and value our journalism, and have the money to spare, to support our work with a financial contribution. Help us continue to cover this story at the level of quality and the pace that this urgent moment requires. Become our partner in empowering audiences through understanding.

To learn more about our audience support program and to make a contribution, click here. It won’t constitute a donation, but it will enable us to keep producing the vital explanatory journalism that this moment requires. Thank you, as always, for reading, watching, and listening.

Five years ago, Vox launched with a goal to bring audiences the most important context needed to understand the news — and the world around us.

As our talented journalists and editors have delivered on that mission again and again over the past five years, the world has become more complicated, intense, and all-consuming. At the same time, many of the platforms on which audiences consume the news have become more crowded and untrustworthy for users, while hurting the reputable news businesses they rely on for content.

Two of the many consequences of this evolving landscape are that the news industry must continue to seek out ways to monetize quality journalism, and that important, interesting stories that are outside of the daily conversation are at increasing risk of getting lost in the churn.

It’s at this particular moment that we’re excited to launch The Highlight by Vox, a new section that’s part of Apple News’s new subscription service, Apple News+. The Highlight is a dedicated home for the signature features, essays, and explainers that are of the news but not on the news.

Consider this section a premium complement to our free daily coverage — a space dedicated to helping our audience understand not the most talked-about headlines of the day but the big ideas and issues that are changing our present and influencing our future.

In The Highlight, you’ll find in-depth features, conversation-driving essays, on-the-ground dispatches, deep Q&As, and profiles that put a spotlight on the people who are influencing policy, culture, technology, and academia. With regular contributions from Vox staff writers whom our audience has come to know and trust, along with a diverse range of new voices and contributors, we’ll build a smart, deeply satisfying collection of articles that will inform and surprise readers.

We chose to launch The Highlight on Apple News because we think it’s the right platform, at the right time, for us to continue to explore Vox subscription offerings. Apple doesn’t just rely on algorithms for its news judgment — it employs a staff of experienced journalists to uphold editorial standards. We have a large, consistent audience on the platform. And the scope of Apple News’s reach is impressive.

This partnership allows us to reach a broader audience while expanding on the journalism we want to do and that we want our audience to see — without compromising on our mission. Additionally, our participation in Apple News+ is a crucial step in defining our own plans around membership. Later this year, Vox will launch membership tiers, and, as Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff said recently, “We’re not going to take away anything you’re already getting. But it will add to the experience.”

For now, all the stories on The Highlight will be exclusive to Apple News+ for a week after they publish, and will then be available on Vox.com. Head over to Apple News+ to check them out. And stay tuned for what’s next in this space from Vox.

When the opportunity to do a Discover channel on Snapchat presented itself, we were, naturally, excited. The Snapchat platform clearly offered an unparalleled opportunity to reach a giant population of digital natives.

And, to be honest, some of us were also skeptical: Could we deliver a strong editorial package on a platform we primarily knew as a way to send quick visual notes to friends?

But as we set out to recruit a team, and as we started reading résumés and conducting interviews, we got really excited. There were people out there who had a great understanding of the Vox brand and a great vision for what that brand ought to mean on Discover.

Fundamentally, it means storytelling that is optimized for the format. It’s vertical. It’s visual. It’s swipeable. It’s very new.

But it’s also old. On Discover we publish one “edition” per day, a rhythm that would be familiar to a newspaper veteran but takes some getting used to if you’ve spent your whole career on the web. That means becoming thoughtful about a whole new set of design and editorial questions. How does one story flow into another? What goes first, and what goes last? And in a universe where you’re not able to go for quantity over quality, how do you really polish your work and make it shine for modern audiences using modern devices?

We’ve come up with something that we are incredibly proud of: a truly mobile-first multimedia experience with great performance and beautiful graphics.

You’ll find our editions every day at 6 am, frequently — though not always — with the entire edition focused on a single topic or theme.

You’ll find a lot of great Vox stories and videos on our channel, but this isn’t just a place where we’ll be pushing content from our website. It’s a unique experience, uniquely suited to contemporary habits, that just happens to be fueled by the same values — an emphasis on explanation, a preference for the important over the new, and a determination to speak to people in a way that is both clear and serious — that power our website, our YouTube page, our Facebook and Twitter offerings, our newsletter, and everything else we do.

We expect that a large share of the audience we find on Discover will be people who aren’t necessarily familiar with us from our website, and that’s great. We’re excited to introduce Vox to the growing and curious audience on Snapchat.

Check it out.

This week, the talented, gorgeous, graceful actress Maggie Gyllenhaal told the latest tale of ludicrous ageism in Hollywood — at 37 she was deemed “too old” to be the romantic interest of a 55-year-old male actor. Her story surprised almost no one and angered almost everyone.

And while this situation is not new, with each and every tale of this sexist, ageist reality women experience, we, like Gyllenhaal, are left not knowing whether to feel bad, get pissed, or just laugh it off.

Enter Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Patricia Arquette, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus with a recent Inside Amy Schumer skit that brilliantly skewers the impossible squeeze created by the combination of ageism and the male gaze. Schumer runs into Fey, Arquette, and Louis-Dreyfus while they’re out to “celebrate” Louis-Dreyfus’s “last f***able day,” the day on which she is officially considered too old to be desirable and is thus released from the pressure to conform to male desires:

Get More: Comedy Central,Funny Videos,Funny TV Shows

It’s refreshing to shift focus from Hollywood’s misogyny to kick-ass women like Schumer, Fey, Arquette, and Louis-Dreyfus who are changing the conversation.
