The Clinton campaign is trolling Hillary Clinton’s likely White House rival during this week’s Republican National Committee convention, buying anti-Trump filters for Snapchat images captured in downtown Cleveland.

Geofilters are those tiny pieces of art that Snapchatters can use to overlay images captured in a certain location. During the 2016 race for the White House, politicians have employed these sponsored filters to playfully knock their opponents and attract the attention of college-age voters.

In this case, the Clinton campaign sponsored some distinctly cheeky messages that attack Trump: One featuring yellow police tape emblazoned with the “Stop Trump” message, and another containing a rotating series of critical quotes from notable GOP figures.

The campaign is starting to attract buzz, especially this one featuring Trump’s rival for the GOP nomination, Ohio Gov. John Kasich: “Why would I feel compelled to support someone whose positions I kind of fundamentally disagree with?”

Can’t get enough Trump?

The long-awaited spectacle of the Republican National Committee’s 2016 convention is here, and there are plenty of ways to watch as Donald Trump, already a well-known reality-TV figure and New York-sized personality, is introduced as the new face of the GOP.

Each day of the convention, which begins today and extends through Thursday, is devoted to a theme. Here’s a rundown of each day’s highlights:

Monday: Make America Safe Again

Headliners: Melania Trump, Lieutenant General (ret.) Michael Flynn, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa and Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont.

Tuesday: Make America Work Again

Headliners: Donald Trump, Jr.; Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., former GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson and actress Kimberlin Brown.

Wednesday: Make America First Again

Headliners: Son Eric Trump, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, whom Donald Trump has chosen as his vice presidential running mate.

Thursday: Make America One Again

Headliners: Billionaire investor Peter Thiel, Colony Capital founder Tom Barrack, daughter Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump.

You won’t even need to turn on the TV to catch livestreams of the speeches.

The RNC promises gavel-to-gavel coverage on YouTube. The official RNC app, which offers produced video segments, details about speakers and a livestream of the convention, also is available for download through the Apple and the Google Play stores.

Twitter will livestream the convention, through a deal reached with CBS to carry the news organization’s 24-hour digital stream. For some reason that’s not an easy feed to find, but you can watch it here.

Facebook and ABC also announced a partnership Monday in which ABC will stream its digital coverage of the convention to Facebook, which includes up to eight different live feeds at any given time. This coverage is the same as what you’ll see on ABC.com or from ABC’s mobile app, but different from what you’ll find if you turn on your television during the network’s prime-time coverage.

Snapchat says it will create Live Stories around the GOP convention this week and upcoming Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia next week. That means it will take user snaps and content collected by its own news team on the ground and compile them into montages around each event. So while you won’t be able to stream live, you’ll likely see stuff on Snapchat you won’t see anywhere else.

Instagram will showcase photos of convention speakers taken at its Backstage Portrait Studio here.

Mark Zuckerberg-backed FWD.us is escalating its attacks on Donald Trump’s immigration policies as the candidate prepares to accept the Republican party’s presidential nomination in Cleveland.

The immigration reform group launched a website, Trump365, that explores the human and economic toll of deporting an estimated 11 million people.

“It’s a big number,” said FWD.us president Todd Schulte. “We want to break it down so people understand this is going to hurt each and every one of us in America, whether they’ve ever met an undocumented immigrant or not.”

FWD.us cites estimates that the cost of such a mass deportation could reach $735 billion to $935 billion over the next 20 years (or about $11,442 per household). It argues that uprooting so many people would have disastrous consequences for the nation’s economy and cause labor shortages for specific industries, like construction.

Schulte said he hopes Trump365 will serve as a “messaging hub,” where supporters could find graphics to share on Twitter and Facebook, in an attempt to amplify the message.

Trump365 launched a day before FWD.us prepares Monday to release the results of a new poll of voters’ views on Trump’s immigration plan in three key presidential battleground states.

Update: FWD.us just released the results of a new bipartisan poll of 600 likely voters in Colorado, Florida and Nevada, which reveals that Trump’s immigration policies are extremely unpopular among independent voters.

Roughly two-thirds of Independents said they opposed his plans to round up and deport all immigrants living here illegally (67 percent), to revoke citizenship from U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants (67 percent), to temporarily ban foreign-born Muslims from entering the U.S. (67 percent) and to build a wall across the Mexican border (65 percent).

Trump365 and the new survey are part of a campaign to counter anti-immigration rhetoric in the 2016 White House race, which included web videos that imagined the plight of people ripped out of their homes or jobs by a deportation force.

Sometimes social media can’t help but channel its inner 13-year-old.

As Donald Trump announced his new running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, his campaign unveiled a new logo that immediately became the object of ridicule on social media, and inspired oh-so-many sexually suggestive GIFs.

View Link

Perhaps that critical reception shouldn’t be surprising, given the unusual rancor of the 2016 campaign. But the day-long Twitter troll-fest is reminiscent of the mockery that accompanied the 2014 unveiling of Airbnb’s new corporate logo, with a circular pink shape that critics guffawed looked like a vagina.

“It’s just like: Go ahead, laugh all you want, guys,” Airbnb co-founder and CTO Nathan Blecharczyk told Recode at the time. “We wouldn’t want to design a logo that caters to the lowest common denominator. This was a yearlong undertaking for dozens of people, it’s something meaningful, and no one pauses to really understand that.”

The chortles eventually stopped, but not before the logo became the butt of a thousand jokes. Apparently it’s still a touchy subject; Airbnb declined comment for this story.

The new Trump-Pence logo enmeshes the candidates’ initials — TP — with the American flag, sparking immediate references to toilet paper and other bathroom wit.

View Link

As the day continued, Twitter became something like a crowdsourced design studio or a post-facto focus group, and the logo emerged as a Rorschach test for the mass id, with some viewers interpreting male dominance and others seeing a rather specific sex act. The designers might have anticipated this before releasing into the wild a logo with one letter penetrating another.

“I can see this being sold to them as a visual representation of two people working hand-in-hand,” said Ethan Imboden, vice president of creative at Frog Design. “My guess is that was the intention, to represent them more in the form of a monogram, bringing together a T and P as a partnership.”

Twitter saw it differently.

Pence: What about our logo?
Trump: I'm thinking me standing tall while you give me a big hug right at crotch level pic.twitter.com/OGVcdKjovp
— PoIiMath (@politicalmath) July 15, 2016

Look I'm just saying that if one was to think of the Trump-Pence relationship a certain way, the logo would make clear who is the top.
— David S. Bernstein (@dbernstein) July 15, 2016

Even serious Republican political advisers like pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson cringed.

View Link

Imboden said the Trump-Pence and Airbnb logos share a design element that invites comparisons to the human anatomy: They’re both symmetrical over a vertical axis.

“It invites an anthropomorphic meaning,” Imboden said.

The most striking decision, Imboden said, was the designer’s choice to replace the field of stars on the American flag with Trump’s and Pence’s initials.

“To me, the designer is making a very strong statement by placing Trump and Pence at the center of our symbolic heritage, effectively overwriting all 50 states with two people,” he said. “It’s a very aggressive positioning of their identity on top of our national identity.”

Of course, professional and instant amateur design experts had earlier trashed Hillary Clinton’s logo, with its blue H and rightward-pointing red arrow that seemed to suggest a political shift to the right. Logos are a great way to capture the attention of distracted voters on social media. Clinton’s, critics charged, didn’t say enough.

The small firm backed by investor Chamath Palihapitiya has dropped from the Federal Communications Commission’s list of firms eligible to bid for wireless spectrum.

The auction is a significant opportunity for new and existing wireless companies to get some prime airwaves. TV broadcasters are voluntarily surrendering spectrum in exchange for some of the proceeds from the auction.

Palihapitiya announced at last year’s M1 mobile conference that the firm, Social Capital Rama Spectrum Holdings, would bid as much as $10 billion in the auction of TV spectrum. It had hopes of winning enough airwaves to launch a new carrier in the U.S.

Now it’s apparently out of the running, according to an updated list of eligible bidders moving forward in the auction.

Rama initially registered to participate in the auction but apparently opted not to move forward. Palihapitiya declined comment, saying he is bound by an FCC-imposed quiet period.

The Republican establishment is heaping praise on Donald Trump’s selection of conservative Mike Pence as his vice presidential running mate, but the two aren’t always in sync — at least according to what the Indiana governor says on Twitter.

There are some issues where the GOP duo are a perfect match (like when it comes to denying climate change), but social media also underscores areas where Pence and Trump clash.

Pence’s social media feed is mostly the bland stuff of an elected official in a Midwestern farm state, replete with photos of the governor posing with constituents at fairs, ground-breakings and ribbon-cuttings, touting job-creation efforts (Silicon Prairie!) and lauding the efforts of the military and law enforcement.

Still, he chastised Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the United States in the wake of last year’s mass killings in San Bernardino and Paris.

It’s news that leaked Thursday, ahead of the official press conference. And the choice is bound to make conservatives within the Republican party happy — though the he’s unlikely to win the hearts and minds of anyone in the tech industry.

Indeed, his selection is likely to provoke the ire of many leaders in Silicon Valley, 70 of whom aligned against an anti-LGBT measure that Pence signed into law last year.

Some of the technology industry’s most prominent executives — among them Apple’s Tim Cook and Salesforce’s Marc Benioff — vocally protested the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a “religious liberty bill” that they warned would open the door to legalizing discrimination against minority groups.

Benioff was the first to speak out against the law, threatening to reduce the company’s investment in the state — and later vowing to cancel all Salesforce programs that required customers or employees to travel to Indiana.

We are forced to dramatically reduce our investment in IN based on our employee's & customer's outrage over the Religious Freedom Bill.
— Marc Benioff (@Benioff) March 26, 2015

Cook, meanwhile, penned an op-ed in the Washington Post that condemned what he saw as a wave of new legislation that he said would enshrine discrimination.

Amid mounting pressure, Pence urged the legislature to revise the law to include language that businesses cannot use it to discriminate based on a client’s sexual orientation.

But the advocacy group Human Rights Campaign said Pence has a “disastrous record” on other LGBT issues, opposing marriage equality and Department of Education guidelines supporting transgender students.

“As Governor of Indiana, Mike Pence has given us all a preview of his vision for America — a future where LGBTQ people everywhere are put at risk for discrimination because of who they are or whom they love,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof.

Of course, Trump isn’t courting Silicon Valley with his choice of Pence. The first-term governor and former congressman is there to make the GOP’s evangelical wing happy. He’s a guy, the Wall Street Journal remembers, who described himself as “a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order.”

For Silicon Valley, which has aggressively used corporate muscle on issues of LGBT rights, it seems Trump’s likely pick might be the worst possible selection he could have made.

Given that it’s Trump we’re talking about, is that really much of a surprise?

“I think he’d be a horrible president, and almost by definition anyone who would be his running mate can’t be that much better,” said Box CEO Aaron Levie.

Update: Trump said he planned to postpone Friday’s news conference to announce his vice presidential pick after a truck plowed into a crowd watching the Bastille Day fireworks in Nice, leaving more than 70 people dead.

A Los Angeles judge denied a request by recently ousted Hyperloop One co-founder Brogan BamBrogan for a restraining order against his former colleague and the company’s former chief legal officer, Afshin Pishevar.

BamBrogan, who abruptly left the futuristic transportation company that is the brainchild of Elon Musk, alleges that he was intimidated by Pishevar — who had placed a hangman’s noose on his chair, according to court documents.

The judge concluded that since Pishevar and BamBrogan no longer work together, Pishevar was not a threat.

“This is denied.”

Pishevar’s attorney, David Willingham, argued the petition for a restraining order was filed to bolster allegations made in the subsequent lawsuit filed two days ago. However, BamBrogan filed the request June. 17.

Pishevar left the courthouse without speaking with reporters. His attorney declined further comment.

BamBrogan and his wife, Bambi, also departed without comment.

Update: Justin Berger, the San Francisco attorney representing BamBrogan, said after the hearing that the noose was symptomatic of larger problems at Hyperloop and how management responded when its former chief technology officer and 10 other employees raised concerns about the company.

“I think the message was pretty clear: It was a threat that said, ‘If you make waves, if you complain about illegal conduct occurring at the company, we’re going to retaliate against you and your safety is at risk,’” said Berger in an interview with reporters outside the downtown Los Angeles courthouse.

In remarks that appear to set the stage for BamBrogan’s civil suit, Berger said California labor law is designed to protect employees from retaliation for complaining about illegal conduct.

“We think a jury is going to take this issue seriously, and we think the company needs to start taking it a little more seriously,” Berger said. “It’s not just about a noose. It’s about a pattern and practice, layers upon layers of breaches of fiduciary duty, mismanagement, mistreatment of employees.”

Hyperloop One could not immediately be reached for comment.

Court documents depict a company riven with interpersonal conflict. In addition to seeking a temporary restraining order against Pishevar, BamBrogan and three other ex-employees are also suing the company, Pishevar’s brother and the company’s co-founder Shervin Pishevar, CEO Rob Lloyd and investor Joe Lonsdale for breach of contract, assault and wrongful termination.

BamBrogan filed the suit more than a month after he and 10 other employees wrote a letter that complained their work was “severely undervalued” and that Shervin Pishevar had “outsized control” over a company that he did not “fully understand.”

The letter was addressed to Shervin Pishevar, Lloyd and Lonsdale. According to the suit, Shervin Pishevar “granted himself 90 percent of Hyperloop One’s common stock” and only gave BamBrogan 6 percent.

The company contends the suit is “delusional” and sources say Hyperloop One is expected to file a countersuit in the next few weeks.

The alleged noose — which BamBrogan is pictured holding in court documents — was a sign that concerns he raised privately with the company’s directors, as well as with a group of Russian investors, would not be addressed. Afshin Pishevar, who was seen on security footage carrying the noose, was immediately fired.

BamBrogan claims he was demoted from his position as the company’s chief technology officer, and that he ultimately elected to leave the high-flying venture because he feared for his safety. He was replaced by Josh Giegel, the former senior vice president of engineering who also signed the letter to the defendants, as a co-founder and president of engineering.

Venture capitalist and Facebook board member Peter Thiel now has something to show for all his support of Donald Trump’s candidacy: A speaking slot at the Republican National Convention.

The Silicon Valley entrepreneur will speak on the fourth night of the convention in Cleveland, the same night as former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Trump himself.

A Thiel spokesperson confirmed the appearance, but did not provide details about Thiel’s planned remarks.

Thiel has been largely isolated in Silicon Valley in backing the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee, whom many in the tech community have openly criticized for his stands on immigration and women (among other issues). Thiel’s appearance will also be of great interest to Gawker Media’s employees.

We don’t know whether or not Facebook, where Thiel has been a board member since 2005, had any say in Thiel’s decision to speak at the RNC — though the company will have a major presence at both the Republican and Democratic conventions. We’ve reached out for comment and will update this story if and when we hear back.

Airbnb is once again under the microscope.

A trio of Democratic Senators today called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate how companies such as Airbnb are impacting the housing market.

Senators Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., urged the FTC to look into the fast-growing short-term rental market, expressing concerns that these services might be making housing more expensive and harder to find.

“We are concerned that short-term rentals may be exacerbating housing shortages and driving up the cost of housing in our communities. We have also read troubling reports of racial discrimination on some short-term rental platforms,” Schatz said in a letter to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez.

The Senators aren’t concerned with a family of four that occasionally rents out a room to earn extra cash. Rather, they urged the FTC to focus its attention on commercial uses of services like Airbnb, HomeAway, VRBO and Flipkey.

A New York State Attorney General’s examination of Airbnb found that the service had turned apartments into transient hotels. Subpoenaed documents revealed that while commercial property owners accounted for a scant 6 percent of Airbnb hosts in New York City, they collected a disproportionate 37 percent of the revenue.

That suggests renters may be getting displaced.

“To assess the use and impact of the short-term rental market, we need reliable data on the commercial use of online platforms,” the Senators wrote.

Airbnb spokesperson Chris Lehane issued a statement noting that the vast majority of hosts across the country are middle-class people who depend on home-sharing to bolster their incomes.
