It happens every spring: As the five broadcast TV networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and The CW — solidify their programming lineups for the next TV season, they must also decide which of their existing shows to renew and which ones to cancel.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be back for the 2019–’20 season. So will NBC’s long-running Law & Order: SVU, for a record-breaking 21st season.

Alas, ABC’s well-liked Speechless isn’t so lucky; it’s been canceled, as has NBC’s Trial & Error.

The 2019–’20 TV season will also see a handful of established series air planned final seasons, including ABC’s Modern Family, CBS’s Criminal Minds, The CW’s Supernatural, NBC’s The Good Place, and Fox’s Empire.

The squeaky-clean image of K-pop and its wholesome teen idols is being rocked by a massive sex scandal that has shaken the industry to its core.

South Korean pop music, better known as K-pop, has become a global phenomenon in recent years thanks to its upbeat, addictive music, perfectly choreographed dances, and high-production-quality videos. (K-pop artists have been known to train for years in their companies before making their onstage debut.) The K-pop scene is currently dominated by groups like BTS, Blackpink, and NCT 127, and the industry has grown so much recently that it’s now one of South Korea’s largest exports, worth $5 billion annually.

But all that perfectly curated success has a dark side.

K-pop artists have spoken out about exploitative and strict studio contracts that trap young performers and closely regulate their private behavior, dating life, and public conduct. There have also been several reports of predatory behavior and harassment by studio executives.

Recently, a major scandal involving a famous K-pop idol has exposed that dark side for all the world to see. But it comes amid a wave of other sex-related scandals in South Korea, which are sparking new conversations about how women are being exploited in the country — and better ways to address this going forward.

The scandal: South Korea’s “Great Gatsby” and Burning Sun

Lee Seung-hyun, 28, better known by his stage name, Seungri, was a member of one of the most influential K-pop boy groups, Big Bang, before he resigned from the industry on March 12. Seungri was nicknamed “Korea’s Great Gatsby” because of his lavish lifestyle, which he frequently flaunted by throwing lavish parties.

The other major name to know in this scandal is Burning Sun, a club located in the Gangnam district in Seoul, South Korea’s capital. The club is owned by Yuri Holdings, a company owned by Seungri’s business partner, Yoo In-Suk. Seungri and Yoo co-own Burning Sun.

Burning Sun opened in early 2018, and since then, Seungri has served as the face of the club, using his celebrity status to attract more attention and investment.

But less than a year after Burning Sun opened, accusations began to swirl about illegal activities happening at the club, including everything from assault, prostitution, and drug distribution to tax evasion and police corruption.

On January 28, South Korea’s MBC News Desk reported on an assault case in Burning Sun. CCTV footage was distributed that appeared to show Burning Sun staff beating up a customer. The customer, who goes by the name of “Mr. Kim,” submitted a petition to the Blue House, which is similar to the White House and a part of the South Korean government, asking officials to investigate.

By February 20, the club had been shut down, and its staff — and Seungri — were under investigation for allegedly distributing drugs. Other clubs in the district were also being investigated at the time.

Then on February 26, a South Korean entertainment news site published text messages that purported to show an interaction between Seungri and business partner Yoo in 2015, where they instructed a club employee at a different club, Arena, to arrange a prostitute for a foreign investor. Seungri was later charged for this.

The text messages also revealed, however, that Seungri was involved in a group chat with other male K-pop idols, where they allegedly shared explicit videos of their sexual exploits with multiple women, without the women’s consent or knowledge.

The chat messages appear to show artists including Jung Joon-young of the band Drug Restaurant, Choi Jong-hoon of the band FT Island, and others joked about drugging and raping women.

In one of the messages, a man brags, “I gave her sleeping pills and did her.” In another conversation, a different male singer jokes, “You raped her, Lol.”

In April, a woman testified that she was one of the victims described in the messages, and said that after seeing the images, videos, voice recordings, and conversations, she believes she was sexually assaulted by five men who had participated in the chat. She said she could not remember what had happened the night of the incident but woke up in the morning fully naked next to one of the men. She has since filed a lawsuit against them alleging assault.

The leaked messages sparked national outrage, and thousands of people petitioned for the case to be thoroughly investigated by the authorities and police.

While the investigation was underway, Seungri announced on Instagram that he was canceling all his future shows and retiring from the industry, partly to protect the reputation of YG Entertainment, the company his band, Big Bang, is signed with.

Despite this, YG Entertainment’s stocks dropped about 16 percent after the release of the text messages. Though both Yuri Holdings and YG Entertainment claimed the text messages were fabricated, the reporter who broke the story responded saying she had no reason to fabricate the messages, and the other K-pop stars allegedly involved are all currently being investigated. Joon-young of Drug Restaurant has since admitted to filming women without their consent and posting the videos to the chat, and was arrested on suspicion of filming and sharing illicit hidden camera videos.

Seungri has been charged with providing prostitution services, which is illegal in South Korea, and he could face up to three years in jail. South Korean police also said they planned to request an arrest warrant soon for Seungri on charges of distributing illicit footage, tax evasion, and embezzlement.

In the aftermath, most of the K-pop idols who were named in the chat message scandal have retired from the music industry.

Then in April, a South Korean broadcast news station reported that eight women who had attended Seungri’s birthday party in the Philippines in December 2017 were actually prostitutes. The women were allegedly paid $4,800 each to attend, and police are currently investigating.

As the fallout from the scandal continues, though, it is important to understand that this issue is not just relegated to celebrities, said Jeff Benjamin, a journalist at Billboard magazine who frequently covers the South Korean pop industry.

“These are larger, much deeper issues that go beyond if a famous celebrity is going to have his career continue or not. There’s real people involved in these things, real people who are not as powerful,” Benjamin said. And some in South Korea see the K-pop scandal as part of a larger societal phenomenon of women being exploited.

Beyond the K-pop scandal, South Korea is facing a bigger problem with exploitation

In March 2019, South Korean police and news outlets revealed a shocking spy-camera epidemic. Around 1,600 people, many of whom were women, were recorded and live-streamed in motel rooms as they changed clothes or used the restroom.

The footage was distributed on a subscription site, which allowed customers to watch footage on demand. The Cyber Investigation Department at the National Police Agency in South Korea said in a statement that cameras were hidden inside TV boxes, hair dryer holders, and wall sockets, reported CNN. Two men have been arrested and two others are still being investigated.

The culture of spy cams, or “molka” as it’s known in Korean, is a daily concern for women whenever they enter public bathrooms. Many South Korean women took to the streets last year to protest the epidemic with slogans like “My life is not your porn.”

More than 5,400 people were arrested on molka-related charges since 2017 — but less than 2 percent were jailed.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has responded to the spy cam epidemic by calling for a thorough investigation, and also asked that two previous sexual assault investigations be reopened.

One involved a famous South Korean actress, Jang Ja-yeon, who died by suicide in 2009. In her suicide letter, she named industry figures who had allegedly forced her to perform sexual favors. The second investigation involved former Prime Minister Kim Hak Eui, who supposedly received sexual bribery from a contractor and was accused of raping a woman.

As the investigations continue into the K-pop idols scandal and other incidents, there’s renewed hope that this could be a turning point. Aria Hangyu Chen, a video producer for Time who reported about the #MeToo movement in Asia, tweeted in March: “The story struck a chord b/c women in South Korea want an end to the hidden camera epidemic, sexual violence, and the culture of women abuse perpetuated by powerful, wealthy men in various industries.”

[FiveThirtyEight / Nate Silver]

Biden, 76, is the 20th Democrat to announce a bid for 2020 among a crowd that is being celebrated for its gender and racial diversity. The party has moved significantly to the left since that last time Biden ran for office, and many wonder how he will fare among more progressive candidates such as Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris. [AP / Steve Peoples and Thomas Beaumont]

Biden’s run is already off to a rocky start, as several women have accused him of touching them inappropriately. Biden addressed the accusations in a video, saying that he would be more mindful of others’ space, though he stopped short of an apology for his actions. [Guardian / Erin Durkin]

There are also controversies stemming from Biden’s time as a senator, such as his support for the war on drugs and mass incarceration, and his mishandling of the Anita Hill hearings. And some are hoping this “Uncle Joe” charm will ultimately be enough to defeat Trump. [Time / Hillary Leung]

Zarif paralleled this case to that of Negar Ghodskani, an Iranian woman who was arrested in Australia in 2017 and separated from her newborn child. She allegedly sought to buy US digital communications technology while disguising herself as an employee from Malaysia; US prosecutors say she was actually sending the technology to an Iranian company for public broadcasting. [France 24 / AFP]

Zarif said he can make a prisoner exchange happen if the US agrees. But planning the exchange, if the US agrees, could take years, especially given that several countries are involved. Still, British officials are encouraged by the possibility that Iran is willing to use Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s case for diplomatic leverage (something it previously denied).
The Supreme Court will deliberate whether a citizenship question on the 2020 census is unconstitutional; two Reuters journalists remain in jail in Myanmar.

And on the first day of oral arguments, the conservatives seemed likely to unite in deferring to the Trump administration. Blue states and civil rights groups immediately challenged the request, and three federal judges ruled that Ross had long wanted to implement the citizenship question. [CNN / Ariane de Vogue]

The census, which is distributed every 10 years, is important because the data that is gathered is the baseline for many decisions made, such as allotment of funding, congressional representation, and electoral votes. The Constitution requires the government to survey everyone, regardless of citizenship, and any efforts to deter such collection of data is “unconstitutional,” critics argue.
A (redacted) Mueller report is finally released; North Korea’s foreign minister wants Pompeo out of nuclear negotiations.

The long-awaited Mueller report is released

The long-awaited report on special counsel Robert Mueller’s more than two-year Trump-Russia investigation was finally released, with redactions, shortly after 11 am — and the results may be more damning for President Trump than expected. [NYT / Mark Mazzetti]

The report is divided into two “volumes.” The first goes into detail about the Russians’ attempts to interfere in the presidential elections and the contact they established with Trump’s campaign. Although the investigation concluded that Trump was not guilty of directly working with Russia, there is strong evidence of his campaign’s willingness to engage with Russian intelligence. [Vox / Zack Beauchamp]

The second volume of the report focuses on Trump’s potential obstruction of justice, which includes his consistent efforts to shut down the investigation — some of which failed only because his aides didn’t listen to his orders. [Politico / Josh Gerstein and Darren Samuelsohn]

The day started with a press conference from Attorney General Bill Barr before an audience of reporters who hadn’t yet read the report. And Barr’s summary — which was quite rosy for the president — turned out to contrast, in some cases significantly, with Mueller’s version. [Vox / Laura McGann]

Despite the murky conclusions of the report, Trump’s legal team has gone ahead and declared it a “total victory” for the president. [Washington Post / Devlin Barrett and Matt Zapotosky]

The responses from the two parties have varied drastically. While Republicans want to move on from the investigation once and for all, Democrats have raised concerns about Trump’s conduct and called to see an unredacted version of the report and for Mueller to testify before Congress. [Vox / Tara Golshan]

Although the future impact of the report is yet to be determined, it’s clear that the issues brought up in the report will not be dropped anytime soon. For starters: Mueller has been summoned to speak in front of the House Judiciary Committee on May 23. [NPR / Philip Ewing, Jerome Socolovsky, and Carrie Johnson]

North Korea wants “reckless” Pompeo out of nuclear talks

North Korean officials do not want US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to be involved in nuclear negotiations anymore. A senior official said in a statement that if nuclear talks with the US were to resume, then someone who is “more careful and mature” must replace him. The announcement came hours after North Korea tested a tactical missile on Thursday, supposedly to prove that the North is not weakened by negotiations with Washington. [Al Jazeera]

North Korean foreign ministry official Kwon Jong Gun said Pompeo had made “reckless” interpretation of a speech from Kim Jong Un that suggested Kim wanted the two countries to finish “working level” negotiations by the end of the year. Kwon called this interpretation “nonsense.” [CNN / James Griffiths]

According to Kwon, Kim’s speech last week instead said that Washington has until the end of the year to change its stance regarding sanctions and pressures. [Gulf Today]

Pompeo has been instrumental in getting the US and North Korea to negotiate thus far; he was also the one who encouraged Trump to walk away from the recent summit in Hanoi, Vietnam. Some North Korea experts see Pyongyang’s attacks on Pompeo as a tactical error if the goal is to bring the US back to the table. State officials have now identified the cause of 39 cases in Michigan: a single traveler. Prior to visiting Michigan, he had spent time in New York. The doctor overseeing him wrote off his fever and cough as bronchitis, and only later –– after the traveler had already been to multiple synagogues, homes, and kosher markets –– did he realize measles might be the culprit. So far, there have been 555 reports of measles in 20 states, with 90 new cases surfacing this week alone. With Passover just around the corner, government officials are hoping to get more people vaccinated so that the disease does not continue to travel. Rabbinical leaders have helped the health department set up clinics and have vaccinated more than 2,000 people as of early April.
