LG has found a fix for a problem that left its high-end Mac monitor unable to work properly when placed within a few feet of a router.

An LG spokesman told Recode that the company is adding additional shielding to newly manufactured models.

“LG apologizes for this inconvenience and is committed to delivering the best quality products possible, so all LG UltraFine 27-inch 5K displays manufactured after February 2017 will be fitted with enhanced shielding,” the company said in an email.

Existing models will be able to be retrofitted with the enhanced shielding, which will allow the monitor to be placed near a router.

The LG-made monitor was announced by Apple in October alongside the new MacBook Pro.

Microsoft has already said that it thinks Donald Trump’s travel ban is a bad idea, but unless and until the ban goes away, the company wants to see the government loosen its rules on exceptions.

The ban, which affects refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, already allows for exceptions on a case-by-case basis. In a blog post Thursday, Microsoft President Brad Smith asked the government to create a process where already-screened immigrants with a “pressing need” could continue to travel freely.

In its proposal, which Microsoft formally submitted to the government, Microsoft called for already-vetted immigrants to be allowed in, as well as students accepted to universities and for those here to be able to travel for either personal emergencies or work needs.

“There currently are law-abiding visa holders who are parents that were outside the United States last Friday and therefore cannot re-enter the country,” Smith said. “These parents are stranded and separated from their children. Other individuals are confronting genuine family emergencies such as the need to visit a critically ill parent.”

Just at Microsoft, Smith said there are 76 workers and their families being directly impacted by the travel restrictions.

Microsoft still wants to see a broader discussion on whether the ban is a good idea in the first place.

“At the outset, we recognize that this proposal will not and should not end the broader debate and deliberations regarding last week’s executive order,” Smith said, adding that Microsoft believes “there is a need and opportunity, amidst the broader debate, for immediate action under the executive order to help real people address pressing needs.”

You can read the blog post here.

Many, many tech companies have voiced opposition and a number of them are drafting a joint letter to send Trump, opposing the ban.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has already spoken out against President Trump’s executive order limiting entry into the U.S. for refugees and citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries. Now he is considering legal action.

Cook told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that the ban is affecting hundreds of Apple employees, many of whom have “heart-wrenching stories” about the ban’s impact on them or their families.

Apple could file its own suit, but may instead opt to help fund or support one of the many other actions challenging the legality of Trump’s order. Amazon, for example, has joined a suit by Washington state challenging the travel ban.

In addition to weighing its legal options, Cook said Apple is still trying to persuade the Trump Administration to reverse course.

“More than any country in the world, this country is strong because of our immigrant background and our capacity and ability as people to welcome people from all kinds of backgrounds,” Cook said in the interview. “That’s what makes us special. We ought to pause and really think deeply through that.”

Apple declined to comment beyond Cook’s comments to the Journal.

Greater China was Apple’s weakest market for another quarter, but CEO Tim Cook says it is actually doing better in mainland China, with Hong Kong accounting for much of the weakness.

Overall, quarterly sales in greater China were down 12 percent from last year, but four points of that drop were accountable to the continued weakness in China’s currency. And that’s far narrower than the drop Apple has seen in recent quarters.

“It’s a significantly better performance … any way you look at it,” Cook said on a conference call with analysts following its earnings report.

Perhaps more interestingly, revenue from mainland China was flat (and growing if you exclude the impact of the currency drop). Sales of the iPad were up double digits there, counter to the big declines Apple continues to see in the rest of the world.

The Mac also saw double-digit sales growth in mainland China, Cook said.

Cook said he was “encouraged” with the improvement Apple is seeing in China, but added that Apple is “not without challenges there.”

Although there was much good news for Apple in its quarterly earnings report, one area that remains weak is the iPad.

Apple sold 13.3 million iPads, generating $5.5 billion in revenue. That represents a roughly 19 percent drop in units and a 22 percent drop in revenue from a year ago.

Still, CFO Luca Maestri said Apple sold more iPads in the quarter than it had anticipated it would. “IPad is incredibly successful,” he said on a conference call, noting Apple’s large share of the market and its share among surveys of those who plan to buy tablets.

CEO Tim Cook added later that there were several factors in the quarter that influenced iPad sales, including a change in inventory levels and component shortages at one supplier — a shortage that continues into the current quarter.

Cook also said he remains bullish on Apple’s tablet.

“We’ve got some exciting things coming on iPad,” he said. “I still feel very optimistic about where we can take the product.”

The brightest spot for the iPad was mainland China, where Apple saw sales up “double digits” from the prior year, CEO Tim Cook said on a conference call with analysts.

Boosted by strong iPhone sales, Apple did indeed return to growth in the last part of 2016 following several quarters of year-on-year sales declines.

The company sold 78 million iPhones in the quarter, up 5 percent from a year earlier and roughly in line with what analysts expected.

Overall, Apple said Tuesday that it earned $17.9 billion, or $3.36 per share, on revenue of $78.4 billion. Analysts had been looking for per-share earnings of around $3.22, with revenue expected to be around $77.8 billion, at the high end of what Apple had forecast in October.

In other parts of the businesses Apple sold 13 million iPads and more than five million Macs. It also generated more than. $7 billion from its services efforts and more than $4 billion from other products, including the Apple Watch.

The results show Apple’s services business growing even faster than expected, while the iPad and other products did less well than many analysts expected. Apple said it was a record for Apple Watch, but again declined to provide any specific numbers.

“We’re thrilled to report that our holiday quarter results generated Apple’s highest quarterly revenue ever, and broke multiple records along the way,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We sold more iPhones than ever before and set all-time revenue records for iPhone, Services, Mac and Apple Watch,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. Revenue from Services grew strongly over last year, led by record customer activity on the App Store, and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline.”

However, Apple’s guidance for the current quarter was below what some analysts were hoping for. Apple said to expect revenue of between $51.5 billion and $53.5 billion, while many analysts were looking for $54 billion or more. Gross profit margins should be between 38 percent and 39 percent, Apple said.

Shares of Apple rose slightly in after-hours trading, changing hands recently at $124.62, up $3.27, or more than 2 percent.

The Greater China region was once again Apple’s weakest spot, with its $16.2 billion in sales representing a 12 percent decrease from the prior year. However, that was also an 85 percent improvement sequentially and a far narrower year-over-year decline than Apple saw in the prior quarter.

Here’s a look at how Apple did, product by product and region by region:

Apple is expected to post its first sales growth in several quarters when it reports quarterly earnings on Tuesday.

The company forecast in October that it would post revenue between $76 billion and $78 billion, up from $75.9 billion in December 2015.

If Apple does indeed return to sales growth, the iPhone will, of course, be the big driver; analysts expect Apple to have sold about 78 million of the devices during the quarter, which included the holiday season. That would be up about 4 percent from the previous year.

Next most closely watched will be Apple’s services business. Though it’s far, far smaller than its phone business (around 13 percent of sales), Apple’s services business has grown upward of 20 percent year over year.

“The 2016 App Store numbers and the New Year’s Day App Store sales underscore how quickly Apple is becoming a services business,” Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster wrote in a recent research note.

But there are several other factors at play, including what analysts believe is a stabilization of the iPad market, as well as growth for the still-nascent Apple Watch.

Research firm Above Avalon is predicting that Apple sold 15.5 million iPads in the quarter, down 4 percent from a year ago, with sales of the Apple Watch pegged at about 5.4 million. Apple hasn’t yet broken out Apple Watch sales, so it may be tough to tell whether the company reaches that number or not.

The Mac remains another important component, with sales also expected to top five million, according to Above Avalon.

Apple watchers have plenty of other questions on their minds. Here’s what’s top-of-mind for us:

How will Donald Trump impact Apple’s business?

Apple’s relationship with the new president is a complicated one, as Trump has called on Apple to do more manufacturing in the U.S. and Tim Cook has criticized Trump’s moves on immigration.

What is Apple seeing in China?

Until recently, China had been Apple’s fastest-growing market. Last quarter, China was the area where Apple’s sales fell the most. The company remains bullish for the long term, but how did it do over the holidays, and what is it doing to boost sales?

How does Apple see its dispute with Qualcomm affecting business?

Apple and Qualcomm are in a pretty big legal tussle, but they still need each other. While it makes its own main processor for the iPhone, Apple depends on Qualcomm for the modem chip, especially for Sprint and Verizon, for which no ready alternative exists.

Nextbit, the upstart maker of the quirky Robin smartphone, has stopped selling the device and sold its assets to PC maker Razer.

Terms of the deal, which closed Friday, were not disclosed. However, CEO Tom Moss told Recode that all 30 employees were joining Razer to work on future mobile products as part of a new unit at the company, which historically has focused on PC games. Nextbit has also halted its own sales of the Robin, having sold out its last production run in January (some devices are still for sale on Amazon).

As for those who bought a Robin smartphone, Moss said Razer has agreed to offer hardware support for the next six months and software updates and support for 12 months.

That’s not great for Robin owners, but better than customers have fared in other asset sales, such as with Fitbit’s recent purchase of Pebble.

Nextbit didn’t begin life as a phone maker. It debuted at Code/Mobile in 2015 as a way for other device makers and carriers to offer cloud-based storage. Its pitch was that phone owners could conserve space by keeping photos and apps in the cloud.

In 2015, though, the company pivoted, announcing plans to make its own phones aimed at the mid-range of the smartphone business.

The company quickly racked up more than $1 million in sales on Kickstarter, doubling its initial target. But in the months between when the Robin was announced and when it shipped last spring, the mid-range smartphone market grew crowded, attracting startups, established phone makers and, basically, everyone who wasn’t Apple or Samsung.

Nextbit also struggled to meet all its aspirations, eventually cancelling a planned version of Robin that would work on the networks of Sprint and Verizon.

Nextbit had raised nearly $18 million in funding from backers including Accel Partners and Alphabet’s GV. Whether the investors make their money back will depend on how Razer fares in an eventual IPO, according to a source, since the deal was an all-stock one.

Ever optimistic, CEO Tom Moss characterized the asset sale as a way for his team to have a greater impact.

“This is going to allow us to basically do what we want to do with a lot more resources at our disposal,” he said.

While the tech industry as a whole started speaking out against Donald Trump’s travel ban over the weekend, one segment has been noticeably silent: The big telecom firms.

There hasn’t been a peep from AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile, and there could be a clear reason why. Each of those firms really wants big things from the Trump administration and doesn’t want to risk angering the new president.

Sprint and T-Mobile are seen as highly likely to seek approval for some sort of merger, while AT&T is in the midst of trying to buy Time Warner. Verizon, which has already made several deals, is seen as a potential buyer of a cable company or other major player that would require regulatory approval.

All four would also like to see the Federal Communications Commission pull back on overall regulation, including the most aggressive parts of net neutrality. However, with a Republican majority and Ajit Pai as chairman, that seems already to be a done deal.

The telecommunications companies have largely praised the Trump administration, especially for its choice of Pai to lead the FCC.

For Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure and T-Mobile CEO John Legere, there has been a notable shift in tone since the election. Legere had some epic Twitter fights with businessman Trump, while Claure was a vocal supporter of candidate Hillary Clinton.

The day after Trump’s victory, though, Legere tweeted his congratulations.

Congrats to the new POTUS, @realDonaldTrump. Let’s see what an out of the box, non-typical, non-politician can do for America!
— John Legere (@JohnLegere) November 9, 2016

Claure told Sprint employees after the election that he wasn’t trying to shy away from his Clinton support, but added that he was going to give Trump “a fair shot.”

“I pray that he unites our country and continues to make it an even better place for all Americans regardless of their race, their national origin or their religion,” Claure said in the election week email.

As for how Trump’s executive orders on immigration fit with his hopes, Sprint and Claure have been silent.

Representatives from all four companies declined comment.

On Saturday, Elon Musk joined the chorus of tech industry leaders who criticized Donald Trump’s move to prevent citizens of several majority-Muslim countries from entering the U.S.

“The blanket entry ban on citizens from certain primarily Muslim countries is not the best way to address the country’s challenges,” Musk said in one tweet, adding in a second that “Many people negatively affected by this policy are strong supporters of the U.S. They’ve done right, not wrong & don’t deserve to be rejected.”

Musk’s comments followed similar condemnations from Apple CEO Tim Cook and the heads of Google, Facebook and Uber.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was perhaps the most outspoken. “Trump’s actions are hurting Netflix employees around the world, and are so un-American it pains us all,” he said in a Facebook post. “Worse, these actions will make America less safe (through hatred and loss of allies) rather than more safe.”

The big question now is what, if any, concrete actions will follow all of Silicon Valley’s stern words.

Neither Musk nor the other tech leaders have proposed much in the way of alternatives to Trump’s moves, nor any steps to stop him.
