The death toll continues to rise, with at least 321 people dead as of Tuesday morning, according to the state minister of defense. Among the deceased were 39 tourists, including American citizens.

The Sri Lankan government has identified National Thowheeth Jama’ath, a small Islamist terrorist organization, as the culprits behind the assault. ISIS, the terrorist group President Donald Trump says was defeated in Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the attack. It’s worth being skeptical of this claim, though, as ISIS tends to say it had a hand in devastating terrorist attacks without evidence.

Sri Lanka’s state minister of defense also said that the attack was carried out in retaliation for the March attack on Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand. However, the official provided no further detail or evidence.

Authorities had intelligence the terrorists planned to target churches with suicide attacks, according to reports, though it appears that nothing was done about it. Many suspect the organization had outside help, which enabled them to carry off coordinated bombings on opposite sides of the country. At least 24 people are in custody in relation to the attacks.

As a way to halt misinformation, the Sri Lankan government temporarily cut off use to Facebook and WhatsApp.

It’s possible the devastation could’ve been worse — a six-foot pipe bomb was reportedly found near the airport hours after the initial wave of attacks.

Sri Lanka’s prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, released a statement on Sunday condemning the “cowardly attacks on our people” and asked “all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong.”

US President Donald Trump also joined other international leaders in offering his sympathy to Sri Lanka, saying: “The United States offers heartfelt condolences to the great people of Sri Lanka. We stand ready to help!”

Christians are a minority in Sri Lanka, and the majority of Christians in the country are Roman Catholic. Easter is one of Christianity’s holiest days, and many Sri Lankan Christians were worshipping at church when the attacks took place.

The coordinated bombings mark some of the worst violence the country has seen since the end of its civil war a decade ago.

While running down the stairs, saw a lot of blood on the floor but we were still clueless as to what really happened.”

Officials believe the attacks were conducted by people wearing suicide bombs.
The US Navy is currently investigating a report from a female marine who said she found a hidden “recording device” in the women’s bathroom of the USS Arlington. The marine found the device, reportedly a hidden camera, in March NBC News reports.

Speaking with Stars and Stripes, Commander Kyle Raines said the Navy takes reports of sexual harassment seriously.

“The command has taken, and will continue to take, all necessary actions to ensure the safety and privacy of the victim,” Raines said.

This isn’t the first time military personnel have raised the issue of hidden cameras aboard a US Navy ship in recent years.

Back in 2015, the Navy Times reported on an elaborate “illicit filming” operation on the USS Wyoming in which male sailors would allegedly keep watch for superiors as their confederates secretly filmed female colleagues in places like shower changing rooms. The male sailors reportedly used banned devices such as cell phones to carry out the filming. Recording went on for 10 months before the sailors were discovered. Eight of the involved sailors were court-martialed.

A 2018 RAND report found problems of sexual harassment to be a problem for the Navy. The report looked at sexual harassment and assault in all four branches of the US military, and found sailors to be at the greatest risk of sexual misconduct.

Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) is currently investigating the camera found on the Arlington, which is currently docked in Greece. NCIS officials have said they cannot comment on ongoing investigations.

The FBI arrested the leader of a private militia group that detains migrants on the US-Mexico border Saturday for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The group operates in New Mexico.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who also goes by Johnny Horton Jr. according to the FBI, is a member of the United Constitutional Patriots in New Mexico. The group posted images and video of its operations on its Facebook page; some of the videos show immigrants being detained by armed members.

A recent video the group posted caught the eye of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which called on New Mexico’s governor and attorney general to both condemn the militia and end its operations.

In response to the arrest, New Mexico’s attorney general, Hector Balderas, released a statement that said in part, “This is a dangerous felon who should not have weapons around children and families.”

Balderas added, “The arrest by the FBI indicates clearly that the rule of law should be in the hand of trained law enforcement officials, not armed vigilantes.”

Mexico also chimed in on the actions of private militias on the border. Hours before news of the arrest broke, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Relations released a statement warning private militias operating on the US-Mexico border could lead to potential human rights abuses for those traveling through Mexico to request asylum from the United States.

Over a year ago, immigrant caravans traveling through Mexico captured the attention of President Donald Trump, who claimed the immigrants, many of whom hoped to request asylum, posed a danger to the United States. A number of militia groups on the border took notice as well.

A spokesperson for United Constitutional Patriots said the group has detained 5,600 immigrants in the last two months, and said the group does nothing more than “to support the Border Patrol.”

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has asked private citizens not to try to help it do its job. Instead, it suggests concerned citizens witnessing illegal border crossings call immigration and border officials rather than trying to apprehend immigrants themselves.

On ABC’s This Week Sunday, Schiff said there’s “ample evidence of collusion in plain sight,” and called the Mueller report’s findings “more significant than Watergate.”

“The obstruction of justice in this case is far worse than anything Richard Nixon did,” Schiff said. Later in his appearance, Schiff added, “I do believe that [Trump] obstructed justice and did so in many ways.”

On NBC’s Meet the Press, Nadler told Chuck Todd there is “plenty of evidence of obstruction,” in the Mueller report. He added there is evidence in the report that could constitute grounds for impeachment.

“Obstruction of justice, if proven, would be impeachable,” Nadler said. “We’re going to see where the facts lead us.”

Schiff went a bit further than Nadler, saying, “The level of evidence in the Mueller report is serious and damning and in normal circumstances would be without question within the realm of impeachable offenses.”

However, the representative said he believes “an impeachment is likely to be unsuccessful” because of the support President Donald Trump enjoys in Congress. Schiff specifically mentioned Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as Republicans who would stand in the way of impeachment proceedings.

Despite this, Schiff said “it may be that we undertake an impeachment nonetheless,” and that Democrats will gather in the coming days to decide “what is the best thing for the country.” The Congress member argued not starting impeachment proceedings could send a message that the behaviors outlined in the Mueller report are “compatible with office,” and so Democrats might decide to work to impeach Trump knowing they will likely fail.

JUST IN: Rep.

This argument was echoed by Cummings on CBS’s Face the Nation, who said that while he isn’t ready to advocate for impeachment, he believes if the House tries to impeach Trump and fails due to the Republican controlled Senate, “history would smile upon us for standing up for the Constitution.”

Cummings also said Congress has a duty to send a message to the president that certain behavior will not be tolerated.

“If we do nothing here, the president is going to be emboldened,” Cummings said. “His aiders and abettors will say, ‘He is pretty strong,’ and they will continue to go along with him.”

Cummings also criticized Attorney General William Barr, who told reporters at a press conference held hours before the Mueller report was released last week the report exonerated Trump.

“He is acting as the defense counsel for the president of the United States, when really, he’s supposed to be our lawyer — the people’s lawyer,” Cummings argued.

Schiff said Barr “should have never been confirmed,” but would not make a public call for his resignation: “I’m not ready to speculate about whether he should resign or not, given that that’s not going to happen, anyway.”

And Nadler said Barr “deliberately misled the American people.”

The trio have targeted Barr and Trump as a unit before. Just weeks ago, they released a joint statement after Barr released his summary of the Mueller report.

“It is unacceptable that, after special counsel Mueller spent 22 months meticulously uncovering this evidence, Attorney General Barr made a decision not to charge the President in under 48 hours. The Attorney General did so without even interviewing the President,” they wrote in late March.

The public will likely be hearing from all three men quite a bit in the weeks to come, particularly Nadler, who revealed on Meet the Press he plans to call former White House counsel Don McGahn to testify before his committee. The Congress member also requested special counsel Robert Mueller himself appear before the Judiciary Committee no later than May 23.

“There’s nothing wrong with taking information from Russians,” President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union Sunday morning.

The remark came after Tapper asked Giuliani to comment on a statement from Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, who responded to the findings of the Mueller report by saying he was “appalled” members of the Trump campaign “welcomed help from Russia.”

“Stop the bull. Stop the pious act,” Giuliani said of Romney, alleging the Utah senator accepted “dirt” on people while running against President Barack Obama in 2012.

Tapper pressed the lawyer, asking him if there was a difference between taking opposition research from Americans and taking it from American adversaries.

“What a hypocrite. Any candidate in the world — in America — would take information,” Giuliani said before concluding, “Who says it’s even illegal?”

The former New York City mayor also appeared on Meet the Press Sunday morning, and told Chuck Todd he agrees Russian interference in the 2016 election was designed to help the president and his election efforts.

Todd asked Giuliani whether there was anything wrong with a campaign using information stolen by foreign adversaries. Giuliani said, “Depends on the stolen material,” and attempted to rebuke the media for providing coverage using stolen information.

As Vox’s Aaron Rupar reported, Trump pivoted on his messaging about the Mueller report fairly quickly. Ahead of the report’s release, the president said it was proof of “total exoneration.” Friday he tweeted Mueller’s work was “total bullshit.” Late Friday and through the weekend, Trump tweeted claims that the report proved there was “no collusion, no obstruction!”

Tapper asked Giuliani about this contradiction.

The former mayor laughed and said in the report, “Some things are false, a lot of things are questionable.”

Giuliani went on to claim the report is biased against the president, and argued it leans too heavily on the testimony of Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. According to Giuliani, “Cohen’s incapable of telling the truth.” He told Tapper Cohen lied to Mueller about the offer of a presidential pardon.

In March, Cohen’s legal team admitted he had asked for a pardon, presumably for remaining fiercely loyal to the president for months after a raid in 2018. As Vox’s Andrew Prokop noted then: “What’s not yet entirely clear is whether this was mainly a case of Cohen seeking a pardon to no avail or whether he received an encouraging response from Trump’s team on the topic.” Cohen has suggested it was the latter; Giuliani suggests it was the former.

“Some things are false, a lot of things are questionable,” Rudy Giuliani says about the Mueller report. #CNNSOTU https://t.co/Fe78m3aDWq pic.twitter.com/DI09W3PVr0
— State of the Union (@CNNSOTU) April 21, 2019

Before the Mueller report was released, Giuliani announced a “counter report” prepared by the president’s lawyers would be made public. This report would presumably counter many of the allegations outlined in the Mueller report. It has yet to materialize, but Giuliani said it could still see the light of day, just “not tomorrow.” Also, “not the day after.”

Pressed on when this elusive report would be released, the president’s lawyer said he believes it will come out after Attorney General William Barr and special counsel Robert Mueller testify before Congress.

A New Mexico militia group posted a video to its Facebook page that shows members detaining dozens of people at the US-Mexico border this week. The live video was shot at night; the person behind the camera can be heard saying, “Holy hell, there are a lot of people here” and “I don’t know if we got them all.” Dozens of people can be seen on the ground, sitting quietly, sometimes breaking the silence by chatting in Spanish.

The group’s page features other videos and photos in which its members detain immigrants while armed. According to CNN, authorities are currently investigating the militia’s videos.

New Mexico’s attorney general, Hector Balderas, released a short statement condemning the group, which calls itself United Constitutional Patriots New Mexico Border Ops, on Thursday. “These individuals should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement.”

The state’s governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, echoed this sentiment in a statement to the New York Times, saying, “It should go without saying that regular citizens have no authority to arrest or detain anyone.”

Grisham went on to call the militia’s detention of the immigrants “completely unacceptable.”

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) also put out a statement condemning citizen-led detentions: “#CBP does not endorse or condone private groups or organizations that take enforcement matters into their own hands. Interference by civilians in law enforcement matters could have public safety and legal consequences for all parties involved.”

#CBP does not endorse or condone private groups or organizations that take enforcement matters into their own hands.

One militia member, who identified himself as a spokesperson for the group, told the New York Times the militia wants to support CBP.

“We’re just here to support the Border Patrol and show the public the reality of the border,” the spokesperson said. “Border Patrol has never asked us to stand down.”

Private militia groups operating along the US-Mexico border are not a new phenomenon. Last year, Newsweek obtained leaked Department of Defense documents that found nearly 200 unregulated armed militia members operating along the US’s southern border. Many of them, work — and behave — as if they are “citizen patrols” supporting the work of the CBP at the border.

Friday, a statement was posted to the United Constitutional Patriots Facebook page defending the group’s detention of immigrants. In the post, the group argued, “Nothing we are doing is illegal or improper.”

However, organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico disagree. Condemning the actions of those taking part of the militia in the video, the organization sent a letter to the governor and attorney general of New Mexico asking them to take swift action against the group.

“The Trump administration’s vile racism has emboldened white nationalists and fascists to flagrantly violate the law,” the ACLU’s letter read. “This has no place in our state: we cannot allow racist and armed vigilantes to kidnap and detain people seeking asylum. We urge you to immediately investigate this atrocious and unlawful conduct.”

Undeterred, the militia posted a note to Facebook Saturday claiming it has been “overwhelmed” by a show of support following the ACLU’s letter. The statement also claimed the militia’s members “are extremely busy with the border situation.”

Two arrests have been made in connection to the death of journalist Lyra McKee, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said in a statement posted on its website Saturday morning. McKee was shot earlier in the week while covering riots in Northern Ireland.

“This morning we arrested two teenagers, aged 18 and 19, under the Terrorism Act and conducted a number of searches as part of the ongoing investigation into Lyra’s murder,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters, adding she was killed by indiscriminately fired shots Thursday night in Derry, also referred to as Londonderry.

Ahead of the shooting, police were conducting searches in the area, looking for firearms and explosives they believed were being stockpiled for a series of planned attacks by dissident republicans. During the searches, a crowd gathered and Molotov cocktails were thrown at officers. Two vehicles were also hijacked and set on fire. As the crowd grew amid the chaos, shooting began.

Cell phone video allegedly shows a masked gunman with a handgun firing into the crowd, according to the BBC. McKee, who was near a police vehicle, was shot and wounded; she was taken to a local hospital but died of her wounds.

Tensions are on the rise in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has seen a spike in conflict in recent months, but tensions can be traced back more than 50 years. These tensions came to a violent head during a period referred to as the “troubles,” which saw paramilitary groups fighting in the streets. The battles were over a longstanding divide between unionists, a largely Protestant group identifying with and loyal to the United Kingdom, and nationalists or republicans, mainly Catholics, who want to see Northern Ireland united with its southern neighbor, the Republic of Ireland.

Open fighting between paramilitary groups loyal to each side of the conflict ended with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. The pact made Northern Ireland a part of the United Kingdom and allowed paramilitary groups to participate in the democratic process in exchange for disarming. Unionists and nationalists were both given a seat at the government table.

In recent years, the Brexit referendum has complicated the Good Friday Agreement. As Vox’s Jen Kirby notes, “the Good Friday Agreement worked on the assumption that the UK and Ireland would be in the EU together.”

During the “troubles,” the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland was a militarized zone, Kirby explains:

The Irish border became both an actual and symbolic battleground during the “troubles.” British authorities destroyed civilian crossings to make it harder to go back and forth, over fears the IRA was finding safe haven in the Republic of Ireland. The border became heavily fortified with watchtowers and checkpoints and armed officers — and that became a target for the IRA. The border became a visible and visceral reminder of the turmoil.

After the Good Friday Agreement, the border was opened; now, questions over what the border would look like post-Brexit have put stress on both the Brexit process and Northern Ireland.

Derry, Northern Ireland’s second-largest city, suffered a bomb attack in January of this year. Months later, the same group that claimed responsibility for the January bombing said it sent mail bombs across the United Kingdom, as well. The PSNI believes this group to be a new dissident — and militant — faction of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and believes it is behind McKee’s death.

Who was Lyra McKee?

McKee, who called herself a “ceasefire baby,” was tirelessly committed to covering the conflict in Northern Ireland. Just last year, she signed a book deal; her first book was to be an investigation into the disappearances of children during the “troubles.”

The journalist was considered an important voice in her field. In 2016, Forbes named her one of the 30 under 30 in European media. After her death Thursday night, a Guardian op-ed called her a “rising star of 21st-century Irish journalism [who] was both fair and fearless in that endeavor.”

In 2014, McKee went viral after publishing a piece called “A letter to my 14-year-old self,” which the Guardian has posted after her death. The letter highlights the struggles McKee faced in identifying as LGBTQ youth in Northern Ireland — where same-sex marriage, unlike in other parts of the UK, is still not recognized. In a TED talk about her struggles with her sexuality, she said, “The first lesson I learned about being gay was that it was evil and I was going to hell for it.”

View Link

McKee’s partner, Sara Canning, said in a statement after the news of her death broke, “The senseless murder of Lyra McKee has left a family without a beloved daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a great aunt; has left so many friends without their confidant, victims in the LGBTQIA community without a tireless advocate and activist, and it’s left me without the love of my life; the woman that I was planning to grow old with.”
