<p>When it comes to virtual reality, Seth Gordon has a unique perspective. As the director of films like &ldquo;Horrible Bosses,&rdquo; &ldquo;The King of Kong<em>,&rdquo;</em> and the upcoming &ldquo;Baywatch,&rdquo; he&rsquo;s no stranger to making content for a wide audience. He&rsquo;s also deeply interested in technology, and is an avid follower of games and gaming culture. I decided to quiz him on the wave of VR that is inevitably coming to all of our screens, big and small.</p>

<p><strong>Where would you say Hollywood is with VR?</strong></p>

<p>Completely nascent exploration. The consensus is that it has a lot of potential, but no one has cracked it yet. There&rsquo;s a lot of dabbling going on, even from a few outfits that are proven. It feels like there&rsquo;s a strong future &mdash; but really compelling, immersive storytelling that is distinct from, and improves upon, the best console games hasn&rsquo;t quite shown itself yet.</p>

<p><strong>Is there anyone you&rsquo;re watching in the field?</strong></p>

<p>I feel like <a href="http://milk.co">Chris Milk</a> is the early trailblazer, doing really interesting stuff. So are the guys at Twisted Pixel in Austin. For Milk, check out his <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/chris_milk_how_virtual_reality_can_create_the_ultimate_empathy_machine?language=en">TED talk</a>. Essentially, his take on VR is that it&rsquo;s an ideal means to build empathy by putting yourself subjectively in the point of view of the protagonist. For a good example of his work, look for &ldquo;<a href="http://with.in/watch/clouds-over-sidra/">Clouds Over Sidra</a>,&rdquo; a VR experience from the perspective of a 12-year-old girl living in a refugee camp in Jordan. You really and meaningfully visit her displaced existence. It is very cool and powerful. &nbsp;</p>

<p>To see what Twisted Pixel is working on, look out for their upcoming (2017) release of &ldquo;<a href="http://twistedpixelgames.com/wilsonsheart/">Wilson&rsquo;s Heart</a>.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s innovative on a number of levels.</p>

<p><strong>Where do you think VR fits into the entertainment landscape?</strong></p>

<p>At the moment, before any of the consumer platforms (Oculus, Vivo, etc.) have taken the dominant position, the real competition for this kind of content will be the exceptional console gaming experience that&rsquo;s already available. If you play a game like Uncharted 4, for example, you find it gives you an unbelievable amount of freedom: You can explore numerous variations of the narrative set in incredibly original locations. VR has that same capability to explore a world, but it must go beyond the gimmick. It has to create as compelling an experience as we already have in the best games.</p>

<p>With VR, it feels like early days. It&rsquo;s powerful, but it still requires standardization. Everyone needs to commit to a format. And there has to be one or two killer pieces of content that people who don&rsquo;t yet own a device will be so interested in that they feel compelled to get one in order to get engaged. We haven&rsquo;t seen that yet.</p>

<p><strong>So we need to get critical mass for the real creators to get involved?</strong></p>

<p>Yes and no. Creators are willing to try anything. But a studio has to be able to make money, unfortunately, before it&rsquo;s getting involved. We&rsquo;ll see investment in VR once a studio (or gaming company) sees a bright path to a core audience. Then, they&rsquo;ll be willing to fund bigger investments and operations.</p>

<p><strong>So VR needs its Pok&eacute;mon Go moment?</strong></p>

<p>Yes, that was a watershed moment, for sure. People I knew who didn&rsquo;t ever talk about their devices or use them for anything but email and phones were talking about it. It was wild.</p>

<p><strong>And until then?</strong></p>

<p>The breakthroughs will come from a handful of independent artists, or even branded entertainment. Those are people who will try to do great VR and put money toward it. Once they prove that VR can reach a mass audience, you&rsquo;ll see a tipping point. And then everyone will get involved.</p>

<p><strong>What do you think is the biggest potential for VR?</strong></p>

<p>For me, the way VR could overlap with social is very exciting. If you could create an experience that was flexible but could relate to peoples&#8217; social participation online, that would be transcendent.</p>

<p>Since Microsoft announced its <a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/6/13/11920142/microsoft-buys-linkedin-for-26-2-billion">$26 billion acquisition of LinkedIn</a>, there has been predictable skepticism about how the company will recoup its investment. In fairness, we&rsquo;re talking about a social network that generally loses money. And while it has some synergies with its new parent, they&rsquo;re probably not enough to justify the price tag in traditional terms.</p>

<p>The problem with this way of thinking is that it looks at the acquisition tactically. The real value of LinkedIn does not lie merely in integration with Microsoft technologies. It lies in the long-term use of the data it has collected. Marketers and advertisers like me should be salivating over what we&rsquo;ll soon be able to do.</p>

<p>LinkedIn data is remarkable for a number of reasons. In the first place, it&rsquo;s accurate. People lie on Facebook all the time; they don&rsquo;t on LinkedIn. What&rsquo;s more, they tend to keep their accounts scrupulously up to date. In the second place, it&rsquo;s economic data. It&rsquo;s about the education, training, career paths and professional content preferences &mdash; things we really want to know. Finally, it&rsquo;s geographic and allows you to zero in on what matters where.</p>

<p>Taken together, the data adds up to something LinkedIn has been calling <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/linkedin-economic-graph">an economic graph</a>. According to the company, this is a digital map of the global economy. It includes students, employees and upper management at schools and companies across the globe. More importantly, it shows not just who these people are and what they do, but how they are connected with one another.</p>

<p>Theoretically at least, this gives us powerful capabilities that we just haven&rsquo;t seen before. Once complete (and to a lesser degree now), the economic graph could influence everything from career choices and marketing messages to educational institutions and public policy.</p>

<p>A few examples can probably help, so let&rsquo;s start with B2B. Often in B2B marketing, you need to influence different people in a company in a sequence to get them thinking about the same goal. Right now, we can&rsquo;t do that efficiently. But the graph could tell a B2B marketing team how to target information to the right people, so that it could more quickly align an organization.</p>

<p>A much different example comes with public policy around middle-skills jobs. These are jobs that require specialized technical training, such as respiratory therapists or computer repair technicians. The graph could show how many people were moving in and out of such fields, and where gaps might exist. That knowledge could be of great value to governments and educational institutions trying to ensure that key jobs are filled and that people will be employable after they graduate.</p>

<p>The economic graph could also give companies greater insight into where to look for talent. It could tell them whether people with anthropology degrees do well in sales or if historians make good market researchers. It could also show how certain kinds of military experience translate to civilian jobs &mdash; something that employers and the armed forces would love to know.</p>

<p>We could also think about employee attrition. People who are looking for a new job typically go on a LinkedIn connection spree before they leave their existing company. If a CEO had insight into that risk (though hopefully not on an individual level), she could activate a company-wide save-program before losing key talent.</p>

<p>The economic graph could also impact investment by answering questions, such as who and where will my customers be in four years. It could suggest new locations for overseas facilities or give us ideas about where our products might be welcome. In fact, the possibilities for its use, not to mention monetization, are nearly endless.</p>

<p>Today, of course, the graph is still limited. LinkedIn has 400 million members, and relatively few in China, where it would need to be to deliver a full picture of the global economy. But the groundwork is already laid in North America and parts of Europe, where researchers using the data have uncovered <a href="http://blog.linkedin.com/2015/08/11/the-top-20-countries-where-professionals-are-moving-for-work-based-on-linkedin-data/">where professionals are moving for work</a>, <a href="http://blog.linkedin.com/2015/06/17/measuring-gender-diversity-with-data-from-linkedin/">what the gender gap is in various fields</a> and <a href="http://blog.linkedin.com/2015/03/09/industries-where-your-network-matters-more-than-you-think/">industries where word of mouth matters most</a>.</p>

<p>Rather than looking tactically at the ways in which the Microsoft&rsquo;s and LinkedIn&rsquo;s puzzle pieces fit now, we should be thinking strategically about what the combined companies could do with this data set in the future. When that happens, $26 billion may well look like a steal.</p>
