If you missed the big news in tech this week, don’t worry, we have you covered. Here are the stories that powered Re/code this week:

The week kicked off with the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple’s dog-and-pony show where they unveil new products that set the stage for hardware to come later in the year. Check out Re/code’s rundown of winners and losers and write-ups of Apple’s new home automation kit, iOS 8, OS X Yosemite, among others. Also, Walt Mossberg weighed in with his view on Apple’s whole game plan.

If Netflix was looking for drama, it found some this week with its message to some Verizon subscribers that Verizon was to blame for low-quality video streams. Verizon responded with a cease-and-desist and threatened legal action. Verizon denied responsibility, as did Comcast before it. Meanwhile, Comcast released a mind-bogglingly stupid ad geared at video gamers (which they have since pulled?).

Uber’s valuation lived up to CEO Travis Kalanick’s Code Conference promise of a “record-breaking” funding round, raising $1.2 billion of what it expects to be a $1.4 billion round that values it at $17 billion.

Lauren Goode tested two new “telehealth” apps that promise on-demand medical services.

It just got a lot easier to get your llama-centric social network off the ground, now that new Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler threw out a lot of the rules and moderation restrictions, allowing the majority of people to start raising money whenever they want.

Houzz, the home decorating startup, raised $150 million in Series D funding, which values the company at more than $2 billion. However, the company oddly declined to comment on the publicly filed documents.

After 18 years serving as perhaps the most powerful communications exec in tech, Katie Cotton retired from Apple. Kara discussed working with Cotton and her public perception.

John Oliver, comedian and host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” crashed the FCC website this week with his net neutrality monologue that went viral.

As if to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the NSA surveillance revelations disclosed by whistleblower Edward Snowden, Vodafone disclosed that some governments have direct access to eavesdrop on calls. In Washington, a group of senators took a look at a bill regarding the metadata collected by the NSA.

In video game news, video game streaming site Twitch.tv released details of a study they commissioned to challenge conventional stereotypes of gamers. They’re not all overweight, anti-social dudes! As the video game megashow E3 approaches, here’s how Microsoft can regain momentum in the console wars.

HP released their Q2 earnings report on Thursday, announcing that sales were just below expectations. CEO Meg Whitman told Re/code that HP plans to stanch the bleeding by firing some 11,000 to 16,000 employees by the end of next year.

Kara wrote an open letter to ousted New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson, “from one pushy media dame to another.”

Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook had a real busy week. They announced a new chief of mobile business development, tweaked privacy settings and released a Shazam-like feature for their phone app. Also, take a look at the seven weirdest things Mike Isaac took away from Facebook’s shareholder meeting.

It appeared as though Twitter would make another move into music and buy its way out of its growth problem by acquiring SoundCloud, but Twitter walked away from the deal, by letting an exclusive negotiation window lapse.

Europeans will soon be formally introduced to Frank Underwood, after Netflix announced it will launch in six European countries later this year.

Although Google has not formally announced its rumored $1 billion acquisition of Twitch, Eric explained why the marriage makes sense. The acquisition would also have something in common with Facebook’s Oculus VR purchase.

Nellie toured Uber’s surprisingly sober new office, and was disappointed with the lack of fish tanks.

Since we learned about AT&T’s plan to buy DirecTV, they’ve spent time selling their deal to Wall Street and federal regulators.
In case you missed anything, here’s a quick roundup of some of the news that powered Re/code this week:

FCC chairman Tom Wheeler has been on the defensive, first denying he’s trying to divide the Internet into “haves” and “have nots,” and now taking flak for his latest set of proposed regulations of ISPs. But why is net neutrality such a hotly contested debate? Don’t miss this helpful video explaining it all from the Re/code team.

Considering the plethora of streaming options for TV and music, it’s no surprise that cord cutters are gulping down bandwidth. Walt Mossberg reviewed the best devices for watching TV from the cloud, while Lauren explained the tips and tricks to follow to get the most out of your music streaming service.

Have you ever caught a glimpse of a driverless Google car and wondered what it must be like to go for a ride? RadiumOne’s board fired CEO Gurbaksh Chahal over his domestic violence conviction after he did not resign voluntarily. New RadiumOne CEO Bill Lonergan sent out a memo to employees in the wake of the firing, stating: “We cannot know for certain what Gurbaksh will do.”

2. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has had a rough week, catching flak from techies and activists for how his agency has been handling the issue of net neutrality. Wheeler has responded to his opponents by arguing that his proposed Open Internet rules are “tough” and “enforceable.” As for next year’s FCC auction of TV airwaves, both Verizon and AT&T have also expressed dissatisfaction with new auction rules that make it easier for smaller carriers to get TV airwave licenses.

3. Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at the f8 conference this week to debut its mobile ad network and woo mobile developers back to the platform, but his intended audience wondered if they really needed Facebook. At the conference, the company also announced that you will soon be able to log in to Facebook apps anonymously.

4. Twitter reported its first quarter earnings and the company is still growing, just not fast enough for Wall Street. First it was the blog that died, and now we’re offering condolences for Twitter’s recent passing. So if everything is dead, then what’s the next big “thing” for digital media? Well, how about email newsletters?

6. After hearing more than 50 hours of testimony, the jury found that Samsung products infringed on two patents that Apple had sued over in its latest patent case and awarded more than $119.6 million in damages. However, one of the big winners in the verdict was Google. Meanwhile, Samsung earnings fell for a second straight quarter.

8.
Listicles. Viral videos. Videos you thought were viral, but were really Jimmy Kimmel — the Internet offers a plethora of daily distractions.

That makes the task of audience building infinitely more challenging.

Contextly, a content recommendation startup “designed for digital journalists by digital journalists,” is trying to improve the way websites engage with readers in the hope of turning digital window shoppers into daily readers.

The startup is the brainchild of Ryan Singel, who spent a decade at Wired’s website, where he co-founded the site’s Threat Level blog and covered topics like the NSA and tech policy. Singel left the media company to work on Contextly full time in November 2012, with co-founder Ben Autrey.

Last October, Contextly was one of seven startups selected by accelerator and early-stage venture firm Matter, which provided each team with $50,000 in funding.

As part of the Matter program — which was founded by PRX, Knight Foundation and KQED — the startups shared a co-working space in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco for four months.

Re/code caught up with Singel to talk about his new venture and the transition from one shaky industry to an even more unpredictable landscape.

Re/code: So what exactly does Contextly do?

Singel: Contextly’s mission is to build, engage and monetize a high-value audience. Our focus is helping publishers get readers to the right stories, give readers great context for stories and figure out ways to build loyalty and keep readers coming back, to eventually have them go to the site directly rather than using Twitter or Facebook as entry points to all of their stories.

How does Contextly differ from existing products such as Outbrain?

Singel: The biggest difference from a product like Outbrain or Taboola is they’re really ad units that have this sort of thrown-in recommendation to your site. Our focus is purely on engagement. And the other difference for us is more of a philosophical one, which is that we don’t send people off of your site ever. We are philosophically opposed to that.

And we are a combination of curation and machine work. One of the things we do is give publishers curation tools and editorial tools that allow them to control that section, control content recommendations, add input and intelligence into the system. We’re just a lot more than a little piece of JavaScript you drop into a template and forget about. What we really strive for is a combination of editorial wisdom and machine work.

In terms of the revenue streams for websites, would Contextly be taking away potential advertising dollars if it’s only linking to internal content as opposed to sponsored posts?

Singel: A lot of it depends on the CPM the publisher has. Building your audience is about getting people to read a bunch of your stories, and then they are more likely to come back in the future. If you send someone off your site on the first page view … if that visitor had stuck around and read two or three more pages, how much money would you have made from that visitor off that visit as opposed to sending them off the site?

So, for some publishers, their CPMs are super low, so Outbrain, Google, those modules are such a huge part of their revenue stream. But for companies that are not — either they have a high CPM or they sell products — keeping people around with more page views, engagement, in the long run we would make you more money than Taboola or Outbrain would. That model of sending someone off of your site to sponsored content of dubious quality is such a damage to their brand that it’s just not something they’re interested in doing at all.

How early on did you start thinking of the idea?

Singel: So, when I was at Wired, when you wrote a story, you would link back to the previous story or stories that you’d written on the subject. Beat writers know their beats inside and out, so we would always add links to the bodies of the story. Our biggest innovation was a text file that had the HTML you would use to drop links to related stories into the bottom of the post.

The genesis of Contextly was in reference to that, which seems obvious, but that’s metadata, data about the relationships between different stories, that’s something that changes over time. If you just drop it in HTML, you don’t have the intelligence to change it over time, so when that realization hit, we realized there was something interesting here.

It’s not about putting a little content widget down at the bottom, it’s about actually capturing this wisdom and intelligence that there is in the links between stories and making that dynamic.

I always like to tinker with things. I was always frustrated with our publishing tools and just publishing tools generally, so this started while I was at Wired. And it became the thing I started thinking about most in the shower, so it was the impetus to leave journalism, which was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. I covered things like the NSA and tech policy and I left in November 2012, so right before the era of [Edward] Snowden, which was maybe the worst time ever to quit.

What do you see as some of the major differences between working for an established media entity and a startup?

Singel: The online site at Wired has always been pretty scrappy, partly because it was one of the first online news sites, so there was always an element of trying new things, and something that is very similar between startups and news organizations is they are constantly shifting to something new.

The bigger difference is that there is a fairly set pattern in terms of what work looks like every day inside a fairly established news organization — like you have a regular meeting in the morning, you have a set of expectations about how many and what kind of stories are going to happen that week or that day. There is a pretty established pattern of how those things get produced and edited and promoted.

There’s room for experimentation within that, but in the startup world, all those things are constantly changing on a daily basis. What you expect to be doing today might change by 10 am, because all of a sudden, now it’s about talking to a client or switching what the priorities are. There’s just not quite that structure.

In the startup world, you’re constantly figuring out what to do next. All of a sudden you get an email from some company that wants to partner with you and it’s, “Let’s go have a meeting now,” and that feels very different.

Where does embryo development take place in oviparous animals?

Why did the slogan “peace, land, and bread” appeal to the Russian people?

What is a positive example of cultural diffusion?

Okay, I’m stumped. And, for many students, finding answers to homework questions online has meant sifting through sarcastic responses and massive spam on sites such as Yahoo Answers.

Brainly, the Poland-based crowd-sourcing social learning website, thinks it can change that by breaking into the U.S. Last year, Brainly doubled its active users, from 10 million to more than 20 million. However, nearly half of those users are still from Russia, and the majority of its user base resides in Europe.

But this month, the site finally debuted in 12 new languages, including English, along with mobile applications for iOS and Android, using money it had raised in 2012 for the expansion.

“Our vision is to see students from all over the world benefiting from our educational peer support system,” said Brainly CEO Michał Borkowski.

Brainly isn’t Jelly, the mobile app that enables users to share a photo and ask a related question. Nor is it Branch, which centers on creating subject-specific social media conversations. And, unlike those two apps, Brainly isn’t linked to your Facebook or Twitter networks.

And there are several similar competitors, such as Quora and Answers.com, which makes for a crowded market.

The site’s structure is similar to that of other crowd-sourcing sites and forums and uses a point as an incentive to engage users within the community to both ask and answer questions. Points are free and you get 50 points when you register an account.

Users post questions in subject-specific categories, which are then displayed on the homepage. When posting a question, you decide how many of your points to offer for an answer. The user who correctly answers the question is then awarded the points. In order to speed up the process, the idea is that the more points someone offers for a question, the quicker they will receive an answer.

The questions can range from simple algebraic problems to broader social science quandaries such as, “What is the difference between Spanish in Spain and Mexico?”

Brainly has relied on outside investment and the Polish start-up raised $500,000 in funding from Point 9 Capital in 2012 and plans on seeking additional funding, but did not offer specific details.
