The world’s insane sugar consumption, in one video

The world is eating way too much sugar, and that over-consumption is leading to nasty consequences in our health-care system and personal lives.

This video, from Credit Suisse, makes the case in just four minutes:

One of the most surprising facts in the video is that 43 percent of consumed sugar is found in beverages. Drinks are supposed to at most compliment a meal, so the fact they’re contributing to 43 percent of our sugar intake seems quite shocking.

Some medical experts are now so worried about the over-consumption of sugar that they want the federal government to impose stricter regulations on the sweet ingredient. Robert Lustig of the University of California, San Francisco, for one, laid out a surprisingly convincing argument for treating added sugar like a controlled substance in a previous interview with Vox.
