You’ve seen it a thousand times: the map of the United States of America. Forty-eight oddly shaped boxes (and a few non-boxes, like Florida), with little cutouts for Hawaii and Alaska. But as CGP Grey explains, that map leaves out quite a bit of the American empire — and the pieces of America that are left out aren’t just left out of maps. They tend to be left out of a lot of decisions, too.
