After a controversial tenure as Attorney General that has stretched on for nearly six years, Eric Holder is preparing to resign, NPR’s Carrie Johnson reported Wednesday morning. Holder is stepping down on his own — Johnson writes that “Holder and President Obama discussed his departure several times and finalized things in a long meeting over Labor Day weekend at the White House.”

Holder plans to stay on until a successor is confirmed. "Sources say a leading candidate for that job is Solicitor General Don Verrilli, the administration's top representative to the Supreme Court," Johnson writes. After Holder leaves, Obama's only remaining original Cabinet members will be Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. Head over to NPR for Johnson's full report.
