Watch: George Clooney’s fantastic Golden Globes speech about love, losing, and freedom

On Sunday night, George Clooney accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award — the Golden Globes’ lifetime achievement award — for bringing some incredibly memorable characters to life on screen. And in his acceptance speech, he reminded us why he’s one of the most respected stars in Hollywood by reminding us that he and his fellow actors are the lucky ones.

“For the record: if you’re in this room, you caught the brass ring,” Clooney said. “I just remember her saying, ‘You don’t have to whistle, Steve. Just put your lips together and blow.’”

His speech then shifted into a heartfelt, tender moment as he talked about his wife Amal.

“I’ve had a pretty good year myself,” he continued. “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love — even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life. And when your whole life is 53 years … Amal, whatever alchemy brought us together, I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.”

Clooney closed by calling our attention to something bigger than this awards show.

“We will not walk in fear. We won’t do it,” he said, referring to terrorist attack against the journalists at Charlie Hebdo and the massive march of solidarity in Paris on Sunday. “Je suis Charlie.”
