Sometimes you can’t quite describe how you feel. There’s probably a word for whatever emotion that is — in a different language. Anjana Iyer, a graphic designer from Auckland, New Zealand, has created beautiful drawings to illustrate some of these words.
4 foreign words with no English translation, illustrated
Lauren Katz is a senior project manager at Vox, focusing on newsroom-wide editorial initiatives as well as podcast engagement strategy.
The illustrations were part of a 100 Days Project she did in early 2014. Iyer says she wanted the project to be compelling enough to do every single day, as well as give her a chance to improve her drawing skills.
“I have had a fascination with learning new languages for the longest time,” she wrote in an email to Vox.
Iyer says there are a lot more words she would like to draw and hopes to create a book. One new word she's excited to illustrate? Saudade. Portuguese writer Manuel de Melo described the meaning as "a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy."
