Oscars 2016: news and winners from the 88th Academy Awards

The 88th annual Academy Award nominations were announced this morning from Los Angeles. You can watch the announcement above.

The Revenant led all films with 12 nominations, followed closely by Mad Max: Fury Road with 10. The Martian landed in third with seven nominations. The Academy chose to nominate eight films for Best Picture this year, as it did last year, and they ranged from small, quiet stories like Brooklyn to the action movie bombast of Mad Max. It’s a much better lineup than 2015’s.

The Oscars recognize filmmaking achievements in 24 categories, ranging from Best Picture to best short films. In contrast to many other awards ceremonies that hand out their “smaller” awards outside of their main event, the Oscars present all 24 trophies during their televised broadcast.

Actor John Krasinski (of the upcoming 13 Hours), as well as directors Ang Lee (a two-time winner for Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi) and Guillermo del Toro (whose Pan’s Labyrinth saw much Oscar success and whose most recent film is Crimson Peak), announced the nominations, along with Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
