Abedin’s statement doesn’t give much of explanation, but the reason behind the split is obvious enough: Weiner was again caught sexting with another woman. The New York Post published the photos.
The new revelations are arguably worse than anything Weiner’s been caught doing before. In one, he shows off his abs and (covered) genitals while lying next to his sleeping toddler son. The New York Post somewhat blurred the photos of the boy, but nobody will have any doubt who it is.
Weiner was first forced to resign his seat in Congress in 2011 after accidentally publicly tweeting a photo of a bulge in his underwear. (He first denied knowing if the photo of the underwear was his in an unforgettable lie to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.)
Weiner tried making a comeback in 2013, when he ran for mayor of New York City. He looked poised for redemption — one poll put him at the top of the pack — until another second round of sexting revelations crushed his momentum. Weiner finished a distant fifth place.
Weiner had been endlessly mocked for sexting under the alias “Carlos Danger.” He was humiliated by news anchors and comedy hosts who questioned his basic sanity on live television. Then he let documentarians capture his and his wife’s private life in a film, Weiner, that was released earlier this year. (Weiner later told the New York Times that the filmmakers didn’t have Abedin’s permission to use some of the footage they included of her.) And now he’s lost his wife.
