The trailer frames the movie’s story as Spider-Man learning what it takes to be a hero. He’s fighting the Vulture (Michael Keaton), but in doing so draws the ire of Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, (Robert Downey Jr.), who tells him to leave the supervillains to the real superheroes. The most pivotal scene of the new trailer has Stark asking for the Spider-suit back.
Spider-Man: Homecoming, directed by Jon Watts, is a reboot of Sony’s stagnant Spider-Man franchise, after two movies starring Andrew Garfield in the title role didn’t perform particularly well at the box office — especially the second one, 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Homecoming marks an entry into new territory for Sony and Marvel. Spider-Man usually lives in a separate cinematic universe from Marvel’s Avengers properties (as do the X-Men) because the two studios each own different film rights. But in 2015 Sony forged a deal with Marvel that finally allows the web-slinger to appear in Marvel movies, which in turn helps boost the superhero’s solo ventures, hence the smirky allusion in Homecoming’s title to Spider-Man being both a high school student and also coming home to Marvel.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
