House Republicans introduced their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare Monday evening. Here are the most important points about the plan:
House Republicans just introduced their bill to repeal and replace Obamacare
- It will allow Medicaid expansion to continue. This plan says that states can continue to enroll people under the Medicaid expansion through January 1, 2020. At that point, enrollment would “freeze,” and states could no longer add to the rolls. Legislators expect that enrollment would shrink as enrollees’ incomes change and people fall off the rolls.
- It will include age-based tax credits for those who earn less than $75,000 (or $150,000 for joint filers). The tax credits are the same size as they were in a draft that leaked in February. The tax credits would start to phase down for high earners above the income threshold.
- It does not cap the tax on employer-sponsored coverage. Previous drafts of the plan would have taxed especially high-cost insurance provided at work. This new plan does not include that provision, and instead continues the taxes in Obamacare for an additional year to pay for the continued Medicaid expansion and individual market tax credits.
