Mark Zuckerberg Donating $25 Million to Combat Ebola Outbreak

“We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC,” he said in a blog post.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are donating $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation specifically to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that’s spreading to other parts of the world.

The Ebola virus has already killed more than 4,000 people according to the CDC, nearly half of the 8,400 people who have contracted the virus. Since the CDC began ramping up its efforts to combat the virus in July, it has assigned more than 700 people to focus on fighting the disease. Zuckerberg says the donation is intended to assist these efforts in the hope of containing the spread of the disease, which he says could reach one million people. “We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome,” he wrote in a blog post.

This isn’t the first multi-million dollar donation from the couple this year. In May, Zuckerberg and Chan donated $120 million to Bay Area schools.
