Verizon Wants to Make This Awful Travel Day Less Awful, Even if You’re Not a Customer

If you’re going to be among the traveling masses on one of the busiest travel days of the year, Verizon is handing out some freebies that might give you a better chance of remaining sane. And, in a rare move, the promotions don’t require you to sign up for a Verizon service to redeem them.

Today, Verizon is partnering with a variety of tech companies on what it is dubbing Connection Day to get free digital services into the hands of customers for this one day. Amazon, for example, has the Verizon promotion advertised on its home page. Shoppers can get 10 free songs from Amazon Music, 10 free or discount apps from Amazon’s app store and two free audio books from Amazon’s Audible service.

Verizon is also giving away free Wi-Fi on some JetBlue flights and 30 minutes of Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi on other select flights.

The promotion is unusual in that it is not geared directly toward signing up new Verizon customers. Instead, the company is likely focused on creating good will for its brand that may pay dividends down the line.

“It made a lot of sense as this is a day when people ‘go mobile,’” a Verizon rep said, “so we wanted to kick off the holiday season with some gifts not only for our customers, but for all wireless consumers.”

Gifts for current Verizon customers include a free gigabyte of data for some subscribers and a discount on a battery-charging station for others.
