Poll monitors from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division will spread out across the country to watch for voter discrimination on Election Day.
DOJ reps are on watch for Election Day discrimination in 28 jurisdictions nationwide
The department announced that monitors will cover 28 jurisdictions in 18 states until the polls close, keeping an eye out for instances of race-based discrimination as well as inadequate resources for voters with disabilities.
In a video announcement about the plan, Attorney General Eric Holder said, "Over the last few months, leaders from the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division have received information from a wide variety of citizens and groups. Based upon our independent and non-partisan consideration and expertise, we have dispatched federal monitors to polling places around the country — just as we do during every election season."
Ensuring fair elections, he said, is one of the department’s “most sacred responsibilities.”
