Microsoft Buying Mobile Email Startup Acompli for More Than $200 Million

Redmond let the cat out of the bag with an errant blog post last week, but now it’s a done deal.

Acompli

Microsoft is expected to announce later Monday morning that it is indeed buying email startup Acompli.

There may not be much surprise in this one thanks to an errant blog post, but Microsoft’s purchase of Acompli shows that the company is serious about supporting mobile operating systems beyond its own.

That is underscored by the amount Microsoft is paying, which we are hearing is north of $200 million.

Acompli, an iOS and Android email client, has been praised for being a great way to connect to Microsoft’s email servers as well as to Google’s mail service.

It’s the project of veterans from Zimbra and VMware who felt that people look at a lot of email on their phones but don’t take much action.

As for the Microsoft deal, Redmond let the cat out of the bag last week when it briefly posted a blank blog post with a URL that said it was buying the email startup.

Update: As of 8:12 am PT, Microsoft has made the purchase really official with the actual blog post.

“In a world where more than half of email messages are first read on a mobile device, it’s essential to give people fantastic email experiences wherever they go,” Microsoft VP Rajesh Jha said in the blog. “The Acompli team is passionate about this quest.”

Jha said Microsoft will combine Acompli’s work with mobile efforts already in place by the Outlook team.
