Enrollment on Healthcare.gov surpasses 6 million
More than 6 million shoppers selected health insurance plans on Healthcare.gov, the Obama administration announced Tuesday. The enrollment figure only represents shoppers on the federal marketplace, and includes some consumers who have selected a plan but not yet paid their first month’s premium.
Just under 2 million of the sign-ups for 2015 were from new consumers, who hadn’t purchased coverage in 2014. The rest were people re-enrolling in policies from Obamacare’s first year.
The 6.4 million figure is not a complete snapshot of who has signed up for Obamacare coverage so far. It covers the 36 states that use the federal marketplace, Healthcare.gov, but not the 14 states and District of Columbia that are running their own websites. In a press conference, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Matthews Burwell said that figures on enrollment in the states would be released sometime next week.
