Square Hires Amazon AWS Exec Alyssa Henry as Engineering Lead

Henry will oversee engineering for the company’s infrastructure and payments platform.

Square is one step closer to fully filling out its executive team, hiring long-time Amazon veteran Alyssa Henry as its new engineering lead.

At Square, Henry will “head up engineering operations for Square’s infrastructure and payments platform,” the company said in a press release. Former Facebook exec Gokul Rajaram will continue to run product engineering for the Jack Dorsey-led payments company.

Henry most recently ran the data storage business for Amazon Web Services, its giant cloud computing business. She has also worked at Microsoft for 12 years.

“I’ve spent the last 7 years building simple, reliable, and cost-effective services that help entrepreneurs scale their business,” she said in the release. “I’m super excited to join the team at Square because local sellers deserve access to the same tools and opportunities to grow.”

Overseeing the reliability of the payments platform is a crucial one for Square, as the company continues to experiment with new payments products like Square Cash and Square Capital, in part to diversify and grow into its valuation.

Henry is the latest big executive hire by Square. Last year the company hired both Rajaram and business lead Francoise Brougher, an under-the-radar but extremely influential former Google executive.
