Square’s chief technical officer Bob Lee, who joined the company in 2010 from Google, is leaving the company.

Originally hired to work on the company’s Android app, Lee was promoted to CTO in 2011.

“Bob was our 13th employee, and over the past four years he helped establish and expand our infrastructure as we grew from a handful of beta merchants into a company that supports millions of customers,” Square spokeswoman Khobi Brooklyn said in an email statement. “We’re grateful to Bob for all he’s done and we wish him the best in his next adventure.”

The company has no plans to hire a new CTO, according to Brooklyn. That said, the company recently added a well-regarded senior technical leader Alyssa Henry, who joined Square from Amazon in April to take the role of engineering lead.

Several Square employees posted photos of Lee’s going-away party on Twitter this evening. Here’s one, labeled as “a dark Square goodbye,” in which Lee, CEO Jack Dorsey, and a few others are dressed in black.

Lee did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
