Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report is packed with all kinds of jaw-dropping statistics. But even by her standards, this one pops out: Web and app users are sharing and uploading 1.8 billion photos a day.

Or in other words — here’s why Facebook, which used to be the world’s biggest photo-sharing service, bought Instagram, is buying WhatsApp, and (still) wants to buy Snapchat:
