Peter Thiel’s Breakout Labs Funds Trio of Health Startups

Breakout Labs, investor Peter Thiel’s nonprofit fund for science startups, has provided $350,000 grants to three early-stage health companies. The recipients include: Cortexyme, which is focused on treatments for Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders; G-Tech Medical, which is developing an “EKG for the gut” to determine the root cause of gastrointestinal disorders; and EpiBone, which is attempting to use stem cells to create “patient-specific bone tissue replacement.” Breakout Labs generally awards grants from $50,000 to $350,000. The companies, in turn, provide a “modest royalty stream” used to fund additional startups.
