For anyone worried that The Leftovers was going to, um, suddenly depart from HBO without a trace at the end of its debut season, here’s some good news: HBO has announced the series is in production for another season.
The Leftovers has been renewed for a second season
In an announcement earlier today, Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming, said the network was "thrilled" to renew the show that was created by "the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta." As Vulture noted, the series' audience has held strong at between 1.6 and 1.8 million viewers on the initial day of broadcast. (It likely adds many more over DVR playback, reruns, and HBO Go streams.)
The premise of The Leftovers is that three years ago, 2 percent of the world’s population simply vanished without explanation. The series follows those who have been left behind — the leftovers — in the small town of Mapleton, NY, as they try to deal with their loss and rebuild their lives.
Here are our reviews of the first seven episodes of this season. The final three episodes beginning airing this Sunday at 10pm on HBO, leading up to the season finale on Sept. 7.
