Re/wind: Apple’s New iThing Is Coming, Re/code Goes to Burning Man and More

Get ready for September 9.

Happy Labor Day!

Here are the headlines that powered Re/code this week:

  1. On Wednesday we broke the news that Apple would be unveiling its entry into wearables at an event on September 9. We’ve also told you that it won’t be available until 2015, and that it will likely top out at around $400. Additionally, developers are gearing up for Apple’s next mobile operating system, iOS 8, and the company has begun shipping out its “smarthome” HomeKit products ahead of the also soon-to-be-announced next generation of iPhones. Stay tuned for more updates.
  2. What’s it really like at Burning Man? Re/code’s Nellie Bowles is letting us know, with on-the-desert reporting: She’s told us about the huge influx of tech into the Burn this year, what a “cuddle puddle” is, what’s happening at the Bitcoin camp at Burning Man and what the CEO of Clear Channel is doing there in an inflatable spider.
  3. Amazon bought videogame streaming site Twitch for $1 billion. Why would Amazon do such a thing? Well, Twitch has a very engaged audience and gives Amazon a media property that’s generating money in an unconventional way.
  4. Instagram introduced a new app called TimeHyperlapse that lets you — you guessed it! — make time-lapse videos on your smartphone.
  5. Is the age of the tablet already over? Not at all, Re/code co-executive editor Walt Mossberg argues.
  6. Earlier this week, Time Warner Cable customers experienced a nationwide service outage, which the company chalked up to “maintenance” issues.
  7. If you needed another excuse for why you haven’t been contributing on workplace conference calls, a Pew report reveals that social media actually makes us a lot less talkative IRL. Go figure.
  8. Guess turning down that Facebook money might not have been such a bad idea after all: Silicon Valley VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers committed to a $20 million investment in Snapchat, giving the disappearing photo and video sharing app a $10 billion total valuation.
  9. Re/code has begun using native advertisements on the site. For more on this, read Walt Mossberg’s letter to our readers.
  10. A new organization is using an unconventional method to raise money to fight HIV — they’re selling .HIV web domains.
