Brad Garlinghouse Out as CEO of Hightail

The former Yahoo executive led the re-branding of the company formerly known as YouSendit.

Via About.me

Brad Garlinghouse, the former Yahoo executive tapped two years ago to transform the company formerly known as YouSendit into the file-sharing company Hightail, has left the company.

Garlinghouse confirmed the move to Re/code. His LinkedIn profile currently reads “Goin’ fishin’” and he has listed his position with Hightail in the “previous” category.

Hightail said in a statement that it has named Ranjith Kumaran, a co-founder of the original company YouSendit, as its new CEO. (See the statement below.)

Having completed its rebranding last year, Hightail has struggled to differentiate itself in a crowded business for cloud storage and collaboration, where larger, better-funded companies like Box and Dropbox have flourished.

Hightail last raised money in November. It closed a $34 million Series E led by Western Digital Capital, the investment arm of the hard drive manufacturer Western Digital. Accolade Partners, a Washington, D.C., investment firm, also participated in the round. Previous investors include Alloy Ventures, Sevin Rosen, Emergence Capital, Adams Street Partners and Sigma Partners.

Update: We’re a little late in publishing this but Hightail sent over this statement shortly after our story first ran:

Hightail can confirm that Brad Garlinghouse has stepped down as CEO of the company. Brad has been crucial in building Hightail’s growth and visibility over the past two years in what became an increasingly crowded and intense space. We owe him a debt of gratitude for what he’s built and we sincerely wish him the best in his next endeavor. As Hightail evolves its product strategy, Co-founder and 10 year board member, Ranjith Kumaran will take the helm as the company’s new CEO. Ranjith has an impressive track record in the valley and a strong product and tech background. He is well-positioned to take back the reigns of the company he so passionately started 10 years ago and we’re very excited to welcome him back to the Hightail family as CEO.
