Salesforce CEO Benioff Leaves Cisco Board

Leaving his only outside board membership.

Asa Mathat

Ending what was a rather short appointment, Cisco Systems said Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce.com, will be leaving its board of directors after November 20, according to a regulatory filing.

Benioff first joined Cisco’s board in the summer of 2012, at a time when Cisco’s CEO John Chambers was fond of saying the word “cloud” a lot on earnings calls.

Salesforce is, of course, the world’s biggest cloud software firm, which helps businesses run its applications without installing them on local computers. And Cisco, as the world’s biggest vendor of networking gear for data centers, supplies a lot of companies that make use of clouds.

The filing says that it was Benioff’s decision to leave the board and stipulates he chose not to stand for re-election at the next annual meeting. His seat on Cisco’s board has been his only outside directorship. Chambers said nice things about him in a statement on Cisco’s corporate blog.
