Woody Allen is famous for directing art-y Mia Farrow starring films — and for serious allegations of child abuse that have dogged him for years without tangibly harming his career — but he is about to create his first television show.
Woody Allen to create his first TV show for Amazon
According to a press release from Amazon studios, the company has signed director Woody Allen to create a television show for the Amazon network. The project, currently being called Untitled Woody Allen Project, has not released casting information or a premiere date.
“Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios, said in the press release. “From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”
Amazon’s first run of on-demand television debuted in 2014 and included the critically acclaimed, golden-globe winning Transparent created by Jill Soloway. It’s easy to assume that Transparent’s success is part of the draw for a big-time director like Allen.
In typical self-depricating fashion, Woody Allen said ”“I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”
