Elizabeth Warren endorses Kamala Harris for Senate, says she took on Wall Street

  1. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) announced Wednesday that she supported the candidacy of California Attorney General Kamala Harris for Senate.
  2. In a statement, Warren praised Harris for taking on the banks in California, and for fighting for foreclosure reform.
  3. The endorsement in the open seat contest is notable because it comes quite early. It therefore appears aimed both at winning Harris support from progressives — and at deterring other potential challengers from entering the race.
  4. Other potential candidates include former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, and Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
  5. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, widely viewed to be Harris’ most formidable potential rival, has announced that he won’t run for Senate — likely because he plans to run for governor instead, in 2018.
