Code/Media Adds Five More Must-See Speakers: Rookie’s Tavi Gevinson, YouTube’s Kyncl, UTA’s Zimmer, Whalerock’s Braun and Tyler the Creator

Yup! Tyler the Creator! And four more fascinating guests with deep insight into the way tech is changing media. Join us in February.

Peter Kafka
Peter Kafka covered media and technology, and their intersection, at Vox. Many of his stories can be found in his Kafka on Media newsletter, and he also hosts the Recode Media podcast.

You don’t need a reminder that technology is upending the media world. But just in case you did, we got one yesterday, with the news that ESPN is going to go (just about) à la carte, via Dish’s new Web TV service.

Unimaginable a few years ago. Happening now, because technology — and the people who use it — won’t wait. Welcome to the media business in 2015.

If that’s the kind of idea that fascinates you — and it should! — you’re going to love the Code/Media conference we’re hosting next month. On Feb 17 and 18, in Southern California, Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg are going to bring the most interesting and influential people at intersection of the media and technology onstage, and find out where they think the world is going. You should join us.

We’ve already told you about 14 fascinating speakers. Now meet five more:

  • Tavi Gevinson is one of the most powerful women in media. She’s going to college next year. Gevinson started blogging about fashion when she was 12, and started publishing Rookie — an online magazine by and for teenage girls — at 15. Now she’s on Broadway.
  • Robert Kyncl heads up content for YouTube, which means for the first time in his career, he has real challengers for the world’s biggest video site. Kyncl is in charge of keeping YouTube’s audience, and its homegrown talent, at home.
  • Jeremy Zimmer runs United Talent Agency, which represents big stars like Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. But under Zimmer’s direction, the Hollywood agency is going digital and brokering big-dollar deals for its clients in the booming online video world.
  • Lloyd Braun is best-known as the former head of ABC Entertainment and Yahoo’s media group. Now, via his Whalerock Industries production company, he’s working on a new “over the top” premium content business, which he will debut at Code/Media. He’ll be joined by one of Whalerock’s partners in the new venture: Tyler, The Creator — one of the most provocative and influential figures in music, and a founding member of the Odd Future collective.

Cool, right? And they’ll be joining a stellar lineup that includes everyone from Chelsea Handler, who’s preparing a whole new take on the talk show for Netflix, to Chris Cox, the man in charge of Facebook’s all-powerful News Feed. If you want to know what’s going to happen to the media business, ask these guys — because they’re the ones changing it.

They’ll be at the spectacular Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California next month. And there’s room for you, too. Grab one of our last tickets, and we’ll see you there.
