Facebook Messaging Chief David Marcus Talks AI, Bundling and More at Code/Mobile (Full Video)

When Facebook unbundled its messaging service last year, it made a lot of people mad. David Marcus, the guy in charge of Facebook’s messaging products, says that it’s made a lot of new products possible. For example, an AI-powered virtual assistant.

Onstage at the Code/Mobile conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, Calif., Marcus talked about rival messaging services like WeChat, mobile payments and why Facebook spun out Messenger as a standalone app. Also, he went into detail on Facebook’s AI work.

“It’s early days, we a need a lot of work to be able to scale,” Marcus said. “AI can be trained and make it scalable. If you can do that, then you can perform a much wider range of tasks, and help make their lives a lot simpler.”
