Apple Plans to Use More Solar Energy in China

The company already is using renewable energy to power 100 percent of its operations in its two biggest markets, the U.S. and China.

Apple

Apple makes a lot of its products in China, and now it wants to help reduce the greenhouse gases that are produced in the manufacture of all those iPhones.

The Cupertino technology giant said it will work with factories there to improve energy efficiency and plans to install more than two gigawatts of clean energy in the coming years.

One of its leading manufacturers, Foxconn, said it will build 400 megawatts of solar projects by 2018. It pledged to generate as much clean energy as its Zhengzhou factory consumes in assembling the iPhone.

Apple also said it has completed construction of a solar farm in the Sichuan Province that will produce more than the total amount of electricity Apple’s offices and retail stores use in China. It plans to build more than 200 megawatts of solar projects to offset the energy used in its supply chain.

Chief Executive Tim Cook considers the commitment to clean energy among Apple’s core values. The company already is using renewable energy to power 100 percent of its operations in its two biggest markets, the U.S. and China.
