These tweets show how common attacks on abortion clinics really are

The shooting at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood, which left one police officer and two civilians dead, drew major media attention Friday. But there are dozens of other attacks on abortion clinics that don’t get nearly as much publicity, a point pro-choice activist Michelle Kinsey Bruns made on Twitter Sunday. Using the hashtag #is100enough, she tweeted out a list of 100 incidents of violence against abortion clinics, providers, and supporters that have occurred since the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the United States. Some of them are recent:

And some of them are older:

You can see the whole list here. Taken together, they show how common violence against abortion providers is. There were at least 73 successful attacks on abortion clinics between 1977 and 2012. Attacks appear to have increased since the Center for Medical Progress released videos purporting to show that Planned Parenthood clinics sold fetal tissue for profit.

Abortion providers, meanwhile, have become accustomed to taking more extreme precautions than other doctors would.

“I’m mindful of my circumstances,” Willie Parker, an abortion provider in Mississippi, told me in a recent interview. “I lock my car. I have contact with law enforcement, in terms of reaching out if I need to. I am prepared to defend myself. I don’t carry a gun. I don’t talk much publicly about what my measures are, because that would defeat the purpose a bit.”
