Sanders Isn’t Challenging Clinton for Silicon Valley Dollars

As Hillary Clinton completed a recent fund-raising sweep through Northern California, the Bay Area’s Democratic donors may have been wondering, where’s Bernie?

Clinton’s rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, has decided not to spend time raising money in Silicon Valley, Politico reports.

The Sanders campaign briefly considered whether to duke it out with the former first lady for San Francisco-area donors, but conceded that the Clintons have deep, established connections in the region.

“She planted a flag right from the beginning of the campaign — SF was her third fundraising event of the entire campaign — and has been working the various elements since the spring,” Chris Lehane, Airbnb’s head of global policy and public affairs and a San Francisco Democratic strategist who has helped the Clinton campaign’s fund-raising operation, told Politico. But, he added, “This is not 2008, when there was an all-out battle to win the hearts and minds of the tech community.”

The Sanders campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
