Former White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer has joined GoFundMe, a crowdfunding site devoted to aiding personal causes.

Pfeiffer will serve as vice president of policy and communications, where he’ll work to elevate the compelling personal stories — such as the effort by the mayor and common council of San Bernardino to raise $100,000 to support the victims of last week’s shooting.

“It’s a pretty unique situation in the private sector to have a company like this, whose ultimate success is tied so much to helping people help others,” said Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer has spent much of his professional life in the public sector, working for such prominent Democrats as former Vice President Al Gore, former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle and Sen. Evan Bayh. He was one of President Barack Obama’s trusted advisers. He was named deputy communications director in January 2009, and later that same year, became communications director.

“When I left the White House, I didn’t know what my next chapter was,” said Pfeiffer, who left the administration in March. “I was hoping to find something that was consistent with my experience working for Barack Obama for so long … That came down to the idea that our campaign was about empowering people to help their country.”
