Golden Globe Nominations Show a Surge in Streaming Shows

There’s no explanation for the doubling in nods for the new delivery service other than that people really like them.

The nominations for the second-fanciest awards show on television, the Golden Globes, to be presented on Jan. 16 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were announced early this morning.

Here’s what Re/code noted: A distinct increase in nods to shows produced by online streaming sites as opposed to broadcast and cable TV.

Here are the nominations from shows on Hulu, Amazon and Netflix (you can see all the nominations here):

“Narcos” (Netflix)
“Casual” (Hulu)
“Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)
“Transparent” (Amazon)
“Mozart in the Jungle” (Amazon)
Robin Wright, “House of Cards” (Netflix)
Lily Tomlin, “Grace & Frankie” (Netflix)
Wagner Moura, “Narcos” (Netflix)
Aziz Ansari, “Master of None” (Netflix)
Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent” (Amazon)
Gael García Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle” (Amazon)
Uzo Aduba, “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)
Judith Light, “Transparent” (Amazon)
Ben Mendelsohn, “Bloodline” (Netflix)

Now let’s compare them to last year’s nominations of streaming shows:

“House of Cards” (Netflix)
“Transparent” (winner!) (Amazon)
“Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)
Robin Wright, “House of Cards” (Netflix)
Taylor Schilling, “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)
Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent” (Amazon)
Uzo Adoba, “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)

So yes, the number of nominations from non-traditional studios has literally doubled in one year, from seven to 14, with comedies dominating their categories. And though the rules have changed slightly since last year, there is nothing in the 2015 rules that would explain the leap — no change in how television shows are defined or distributed.

So the only explanation is that the market is expanding rapidly, and people really like these shows.

The other news is that Netflix continues its stranglehold on the Globes, with eight nominations (up from five last year). Amazon still comes in second, with five (up from two). And Hulu is the new contender, with just one nomination as it bursts upon the scene with its first Golden Globe nomination. Exciting times, Hulu!
