What people in your state want for Christmas, in one map

All Alabamans want for Christmas is ... a purse designed to conceal a gun, apparently.

This is one tidbit that showed up when we asked Google to pull data on the most uniquely searched shopping items for each state over the past week. These aren’t the most frequent searches but rather the ones that turn up at a disproportionately high rate.

Some of the results seem quite in keeping with states’ individual characters. Residents of rainy Washington state are scouting out North Face rain jackets. North Carolinians, meanwhile, are yearning for a jersey of the Panthers’ star quarterback, Cam Newton. And in snowy Colorado, Sorel women’s winter boots are a hot commodity.

The search for concealed carry purses in Alabama makes sense, too. The state has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country; 57.2 percent of Alabama households have a gun.
