Wozilla? Tokyo Prepares for Apple Founder’s Comic Con.

Tokyo has exported plenty of its pop culture icons to the U.S. — Godzilla, Pokemon and Speed Racer among them.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak plans to return the favor by bringing an American-style pop culture fan extravaganza, the comic book convention, to Tokyo in 2016. And really, who better to serve as America’s ambassador for all things geeky?

Woz will promote the inaugural Tokyo Comic Con at a weekend event in Tokyo, where fans will be able to meet two actors best known for their roles in the “Star Wars” films, Ian McDiarmid (as the Sith lord Emperor Palpatine) and Ray Park (who portrayed Darth Maul).

“From Godzilla to Pokemon to Power Rangers, Japan exports many pop culture trends to the rest of the world,” Woz said in a statement. “Even the moral codes of the ‘Star Wars’ Jedi are based on some of Japan’s historical samurai culture. In 2016, we will come full circle back to Japan to blend pop culture from Japan and the USA at Tokyo Comic Con.”

Maybe someone who attends the event will remind Woz that cosplay is a Japanese export as well.

The Tokyo Comic Con is a sister event to the planned Silicon Valley Comic Con coming next March to San Jose (but not related to the giant, hyphenated Comic-Con International in San Diego, which is run by another organization).
