Lately, it has become difficult to tell the difference between Bill Murray, the actor, and “Bill Murray,” the character he plays in social media. Which is precisely why this special is so perfect: Not only is Murray a fictional version of himself, panicky and hard-drinking yet smoothly comfortable among mysteriously sophisticated associates, but the all-star cast is neatly split between celebs playing characters (Amy Poehler as a frantic producer, Michael Cera as a predatory agent, Jason Schwartzman — Murray’s co-star in “Rushmore” — as a sad groom) and celebs playing themselves (George Clooney, Paul Schaeffer and a surprisingly euphonious Miley Cyrus).
When you start drawing lines among the participants, you start to realize that this really is Coppola’s party — it’s made up of friends, family and professional associates, as if her life has been a blurring of all three. Which it probably has. The result is a truly magical story of dashed hopes giving way to an improvised celebration, the kind New York City was built on.
