Chart: Black and Latino internet users prefer Instagram to Pinterest

There’s a racial divide in the use of social media platforms, according to a recent Pew Research Center study.

The survey of 1,445 internet users, conducted on September 2014, found that social media preferences vary by race. White, black, and Latino adults 18 and older use Facebook and Twitter at close rates. But photo-sharing platform Instagram is more popular among black and Latino internet users, while white adults are more likely to turn to Pinterest.

The survey also found Instagram is particularly popular among young people. Roughly 53 percent of internet users ages 18 to 29 use Instagram, while a quarter or less of older subgroups use the platform.

Age could account for why social media preferences vary by race. Latinos are generally younger than white and black Americans, in part due to much higher birth rates among Hispanic communities.
