Harris joined the publisher in 2008, when it was more of a notion about “viral content” than a company. At the time, he told co-workers via an email today, “we were 6 employees in a small office above a mahjongg parlor in Chinatown.” BuzzFeed now has more than 900 employees.
Harris was originally BuzzFeed’s general manager, and eventually ended up as its “Chief Business Operations Officer”; the company’s website describes his role as “lead[ing] a team of strategists, planners, account managers, marketers and advertising operations professionals who work with Fortune 500 brands.”
BuzzFeed chief of staff Ashley McCollum, who confirmed Harris’s departure and provided his companywide email, said the company hasn’t named a successor for his role. Harris says he doesn’t have a new position lined up.
