Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky Talks Bookings, Regulations at Code (Full Video)

“We think to be regulated is to be recognized,” Chesky said.

Asa Mathat for Re/code

Brian Chesky, the CEO of apartment-sharing company Airbnb, took to the Code stage for the first time this year. Kara Swisher compared his company’s challenges to those of Uber — the other big sharing-economy startup — and compared Chesky to its CEO, saying that he is the “nice” version of Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick.

Airbnb is facing crucial struggles with city governments across the world. Unlike in its earlier days, it has started to work alongside local government, making compromises to help smooth the way for its cause. “We think to be regulated is to be recognized,” Chesky said.

He went on to disclose that the company is doing a million bookings per night this summer and that it has done experiments with other kinds of hospitality businesses in addition to apartment sharing, although he wouldn’t give more information than that.
