Streaming services, Twitter and shifting social norms are all pushing people to think differently. For the team behind “Empire,” this year’s breakout Fox hit about a drama-ridden family in the music industry, embracing the unorthodox has catapulted them to a resounding ratings victory.
Onstage with Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg at the Code Conference, executive producer Brian Grazer, actor Terrence Howard, creators Danny Strong and Lee Daniels and show runner Ilene Chaiken talked extensively about the new terrain the show is covering.
They went long on how the show’s Twitter following affected the writer’s room and how tech is changing narrative storytelling more broadly. Daniels detailed why he treats Instagram like a diary, Chaiken expanded on how legacy TV folks are making sure they stay relevant in the digital age and Howard made the Grateful Dead sound like Goldman Sachs with his trippy comments on “two-dimensional reality” and protons.
