State seals are one of the many ways states can represent themselves. But because they’re so rarely seen, it’s surprisingly tricky to recognize them.

Each seal has clues — from the dates to the mottos to the images used — that hint at the state it represents. We’ve removed the name from each of these seals — can you identify the state?
