Amazon ruled the tech news cycle this week. Its earnings sent the stock up 17 percent on Thursday, riding largely on the backs of widening profits for its cloud business. Per usual, Re/code’s reporters offered a dose of realism to temper the Street’s enthusiasm.

On Friday, Jason Del Rey joined a panel on the e-commerce giant during CNBC’s “Squawk Alley.” He dismissed the idea that Amazon will spin off its cloud service into a separate business, but noted that traditional retailers should be very nervous about Amazon’s growth.
Kara Swisher, on CNBC the same day, had an even blunter message to the finance types waiting for more Amazon windfalls: “They’re kind of screwing with you all.”
