HP CEO Whitman Joins Board at SurveyMonkey

It’s Whitman’s first outside board seat since 2011.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman has been named to the board of directors of SurveyMonkey, the Web survey outfit whose founding CEO Dave Goldberg died suddenly in May.

Whitman joining the board is notable for a few reasons. It’s her first outside board appointment since 2011, the year she took over as HP’s CEO, following the ouster of its prior CEO Léo Apotheker. She also sits on the board of consumer products giant Procter & Gamble.

Second, it’s the first time Whitman will be serving on a board alongside Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Goldberg’s widow. Sandberg joined the board in July along with former Facebook CFO David Ebersman.

Third, Whitman has a long history with Bill Veghte, who was named SurveyMonkey’s CEO after serving both as HP’s COO and as its chief strategy officer before taking over as head of its enterprise business unit. He left HP in June after a five-year stint, following a 20-year run at Microsoft.
