- At its special event on Wednesday, Apple unveiled the new iPhones 6 and 6s Plus, the hefty iPad Pro, fancy new Siri technology, some Apple Watch bands and new Apple TV hardware and software. The new phones are selling out across the globe; if you want to buy one, here’s what you should know about their new pricing scheme.
- Also on Wednesday, Re/code hosted an Evening with Code/Media. Editors Kara Swisher, Peter Kafka and Jason Del Rey interviewed New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet, Thrillist CEO Ben Lerer and AMC Networks chief Josh Sapan. - In an essay on Re/code and in an interview with Executive Editor Kara Swisher, Ellen Pao says she is ending her gender discrimination lawsuit against her former employer, the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Pao says she can’t afford to pursue the case, and that the court system is stacked against women and minorities who face workplace discrimination.
- Though he faces an uphill battle against rival Didi Kuaidi in China, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick doesn’t seem too worried. He said the ride-hailing service will be in 100 cities in China over the next year, which is double the number he told investors just three months ago. Relatedly, the Alibaba- and Tencent-backed Didi reportedly invested in Uber’s American rival, Lyft.
- Facebook, Apple and Snapchat have all announced or launched projects to get publishers to host content directly on their mobile platforms. Google and Twitter are partnering on their own open-source “Instant Articles” product, though the terms of the deal haven’t been finalized yet.
- Yahoo media boss and CMO Kathy Savitt, formerly a confidante of CEO Marissa Mayer, has left the company to join the Hollywood studio STX Entertainment. A number of senior executives have departed Yahoo in recent months, which Re/code will have more on soon.
- This week on the “Re/code Decode” podcast, Kara Swisher talks with LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner about how his company grew from a business-oriented social network into one of the Internet’s biggest content platforms. Plus, Walt Mossberg talks productivity apps and Ina Fried explains the economics of wearables.
- ThredUp, a startup that sells secondhand clothing online, raised $81 million at a $500 million valuation. The investment, the largest-ever in a company of ThredUp’s kind, was led by Goldman Sachs.
- Last month, California passed legislation that would have effectively halted commercial drone usage in California in its tracks. Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the bill this week, notching a victory for Google, Amazon and other tech companies.
