Uber Suspends Service in New York City, New Jersey During Winter Storm Jonas

The ferocious storm, which is producing blizzard conditions up and down the east coast, has caused Uber to suspend services on Saturday in New York City and New Jersey. Uber shut down service in New York City at 2:30 pm ET after Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a travel ban. The Uber app also began notifying New Jersey residents Saturday afternoon that service was suspended.
An Uber spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on other cities where the service might be suspended.
In the past, Uber has come under fire for exorbitant surge pricing during storms. But before Jonas hit, the company reached an agreement with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to cap the pricing during the storm. It’s unclear what the price ceiling was.
Update: Uber has now suspended service in Lancaster and Harrisburg, Pa. Lyft is not operating in New York City because of the travel ban. It’s unclear if Lyft is operating in New Jersey, but no cars have been showing up in the app there.
